There are 2 variants of predator 17(currently manufactured) and 2 variants of predator helios 300, so it really depends on which variants you compare. In general predator 17 is better and has better cooling solution that helios 300.

    Predator 17:
G9-793 - with i7-7700hq or i7-6700hq and gtx1070(can be overclocked from predator sense), aero blade metal fan
G5-793 - with i7-7700hq or i7-6700hq and gtx1060(can be overclocked from predator sense), aero blade metal fan

    Helios 300:
    g3-571 - with i5-7300hq or i7-7700hq and gtx1050ti or gtx1060(both gpu's don't support overclocking), plastic fans
g3-572 - with i5-7300hq or i7-7700hq and gtx1050ti or gtx1060(both gpu's can be overclocked), aero blade metal fan

On predator 17 the gtx1060 clocks a bit higher than the 1060 on g3-572, because of the better cooling solution. Also predator 17 has killer(that is the brand) wireless LAN and WLAN, while helios 300 has qualcomm wireless card.

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

So it sounds like the 17 with a 1070 is a more bang for my buck? How long will the 1070 hold up? A couple years at least?

Do you mean how long it is going to last or how long it is going stay somewhat competitive? If it is about durability at least 5 years. If it is about gaming, it depends and to be honest, I don't know in what direction graphicalwise the games will go.

I meant competitive, like you think it will be able to run high settings for at least 2 years?

For a long time I was leaning towards the predator helios 300 17 inch but I got extra money now so I think I'm gonna go for the predator 17 if it's well recommended

g3-571 and g3-572 are only 15inch. The 17inch model is ph317-51 and it has the same specs as g3-572, just 17inches instead of 15.6inches.

Both laptops are great in my opinion. Of course predator 17(gtx 1060) has its advantages over helios 300, which of can be seen from the price difference.
I suggest you to have a look at these reviews, which will make it easier to choose which one to buy.

    Acer helios 300 PH317-51
    Acer predator G5-793
    Acer predator G9-793

G9-793 has features, which g5-793 lacks. G5-793 lacks customisable keyboard backlighting(The keyboard is red and num pad is blue), the logo at the back doesn't light up and I think it doesn't come with frost core too. I just want you to be aware of these, if you decide to go with G5-793.

I think I will be going with the g9 especially it's a more powerful graphics card and it has thunderbolt 3, wich in my opinion will be a must have to extend its life
