Laptop won't wake up from sleep, fans on full.

Sometimes when my laptop goes into sleep mode, the fans turn on full blast, and it won't wake up.  This happens when the laptop is plugged into power (I haven't tested while on battery) and is open.  The keyboard lights are on, as are the power button and trackpad lights.  Pressing keys, touching the trackpad and pressing the power button have no effect (holding the power button down long enough will shut off the computer, though).  fn-F6 does not turn on the screen.  Pressing the trackpad disable button does not seem to have any effect, so it seems like it is more than just the screen being off. However, fn-F9 will turn on and off the keyboard lights.  Closing the lid will cause the lights on the back of the lid to turn off, but does not cause the fans to stop.

Any idea what might be causing this, or how I can fix it?  I've run out of ideas.

I have very similar problem on 3mo old Acer Spin 5. Did you find a solution?
Laptop has worked perfect for 3mos but couple of days ago, when it goes to sleep, the fan starts running full and if you open up the laptop, the keyboard lights are on but nothing on screen. Pressing power button or holding power button have no effect. Eventually battery runs out and fan stops. Plug back in and laptop works fine again for a while and then repeats problem.

Did you check the powersave settings perhaps? Why don't you disable sleep completely and try if that helps?

I just bought a Pred 17 from someone and thought they sold me a lemon. (Had same issue mentioned in this post)

Turns out updating the BIOs fixes the issue and I've had no problems since.
    I updated to version 1.13.

Most of these posts regarding ACER laptops not waking up from the sleep mode are 2 years old or more.  This is 2020 and as long as I have been searching for the resolution to this issue I have found none.  Isn't it about time ACER steps up and admits they are selling flawed products and issue a recall to fix this problem?  I can't imagine this laptop will last very long when the fans are running full speed to remove the amount of heat being generated when the thing is stuck in sleep mode.  I would appreciate a response from someone on this.
  • @iggy800Check the hybrid suspension.

Check the hybrid suspension????  I'm sorry but I have no clue what the hybrid suspension is regarding a laptop computer.  It almost sounds like a facetious response to me.  Can you explain please?

Same problem here with my Acer Spin 5... Did anyone find an actual solution?

Apart from disabling the "sleep" feature, is there a proper fix to avoid this problem (not waking up) after sleep?

"sleep" feature is a basic feature for most if not all laptops anyway.

Instead of power off and on all the time, I prefer to keep my work and reduce power usage (sleep mode) while walking away for a few hours. Anyone can shed some light please?

  • if you use an ssd, the ideal is to disable fast startup and hybrid suspension. you can now check if a firmware update solves the problem.

I called tech support, and they told me to make a change in Power Settings.
In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Go down to "Multimedia settings", and for "When sharing media", for "plugged in", change it to "Allow the computer to sleep". That ought to do it!

Personally my best advice here its do not use sleep always was and always will be buggy on windows no matter what they do they wont fix it properly and no one needs sleep/hibernate these days with the ssd/nvme speeds its faster that snapping a finger :)

  • Exactly @xapim. I installed an nvme here on an515-51 and windows starts up in 20 seconds, with fast startup, hibernation, sleep and hybrid sleep disabled, with all programs starting with windows. When I activate fast startup, hibernation, sleep and hybrid sleep, windows boots in 16 seconds, that is, there is a gain of only 4 seconds. In addition, it has to be taken into account, that the fast startup saves some information in the ssd and that is why I always recommend disabling the fast startup, because the useful life of the ssd depends on the amount of writing and reading.
