Acer Aspire 5730 and hardware upgrades (memory, SSD)

I'm trying to "resurrect" my old Aspire 5730-4163 for my son. First I have got 8GB (2x 4GB) memory. BIOS (ver. 1.0.7) recognize both sticks as full 8GB but any 64-bit OS not (Win7 or Ubuntu). As second I have tried to install SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) which is not recognized by the BIOS as AHCI or neither IDE.

My question here if anything from above is possible to do for that Aspire model or not? If so do I need to update BIOS to get memory to work with Windows, get another SSD (or regular disk with a cache)?

Thanks for any help.

Go to crucial dot com. It's a SATA2 interface so whatever SATA3 SSD you get will be limited. Newer HDDs would be significantly faster than the original. I doubt the BIOS will recognise any more than 8GB since the advertised max is 4GB. Even if it did recognise 16GB, I doubt there'd be much of a noticeable difference or bang for the buck. Jack E/NJ

Any reason why that Samsung is not picked up by the BIOS? It may be that any SSD is not going to be recognized by that laptop? Maybe instead of SSD get something like Seagate 1TB BarraCuda (ST1000LM048) 5400 RPM 128MB Cache?

The EVO850 has probably had more issues than most SSDs with older SATA2 controllers. Check the MAIN bios dropdown to make sure the controller mode is AHCI. The newer HDDs should also be noticeably faster than the older HDDs. Jack E/NJ
