Function key (Fn) does not work correctly

Some days ago the function key (Fn) on my Acer Aspire V3-772-G notebook (3 years old) started not working correctly anymore in Windows 10, showing erratic behavior:

  • On the Windows desktop it marks a desktop icon. Upon re-using Fn it launches that program. It is always the same icon.
  • Also on the desktop it sets the computer to flight mode (deactivating Wifi).
  • In the Windows search bar it types a "/" or "8".
  • In Firefox upon using Fn once the menu bar (file tab) appears and disappears again when Fn is pressed once more.

Steps I have tried in this order:

  • checking the Windows diagnostic tool: did not find anything useful
  • googling for similar problems of people where the Fn button did not work: most people say their Fn button does not work at all or is turned off
  • installing the Launch Manager (version 4.0.8_W7x86_A); that was one of the first versions I found on one of the pages while googling, although I thought there should be one offered directly on the Acer Website: did not seem to have any effect, neither after restarting (and launching the Launch Manager exe did not open any window)
  • installed the latest Windows updates
  • at some point I found newer versions of the Launch Manager (LaunchManager_Dritek_5.1.15_W7x64_A and LaunchManager_Acer_8.00.8116_W81x64_A); I deinstalled the previous version of the Launch Manager and restarted the computer

Then the Fn key worked again for the remaining day. The next morning the same problems as the day before appeared again.

Next steps (in this order):

  • created Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Live USB stick and launched it from there: Fn button worked perfectly fine. This showed the problems are somehow software- and not hardware-related. Maybe some driver issue in Windows?
  • launched Windows in Safe Mode (from msconfig.exe and the start screen respectively): Fn button worked
  • launched Windows via diagnostic start up (msconfig.exe): Fn button worked
  • launched Windows normally with all services activated: Fn button had the usual problems
  • went to Device Manager: no problems apparent, but I tried deinstalling the keyboard drivers (both the HID-keyboard and Standard PS/2-keyboard drivers) and relaunched the computer

This once more made the Fn button work.

However just 1-2 days afterwards (yesterday) the Fn key again started working incorrectly as before. I now have no clue what might be the reason of this. Any ideas on what it could be and what steps to try (thanks in advance)?
