How can I make a USB boot drive?

Want to be able to run SPINRITE for disk maintenance.

you already asked and i already replied to your question, by the way:

bootable devices must be x64 (64 bit version) and have GPT partition scheme with FAT32 partition

you can use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive:

    https://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US

or if your bootable software is not UEFI compatible, from BIOS you must select LaunchCSM or Legacy.

i would contact them and ask if it will work under UEFI and AHCI controller, since your desktop doesn't have IDE option (very old HDD access)

Rufus doesn't do that.  There is no bootable option for FAT32.

I see no option for "LaunchCSM or Legacy", just Secure Boot.

I will ask about the controller.

OK, found it.  Also needed to change BOOT FILTER.

But SpinRite hangs on "Discovering Storage Devices", so will pass the ball over to them.

Had to use the HP Utility & Win98 option, though.  Rufus doesn't get it done.

    Thanks.

Yes, they blocked Rufus to create proper DOS bootable USB flash drive, but if you don't specify what you need...i can't understand that you wanted a bootable DOS enviroment.

your BIOS can set IDE mode too:

    Advanced tab

OnBoard SATA mode - IDE native

The SATA mode is in black and will not change -- only items in blue are adjustable.

Is there a way to make it blue?
