Predator 17 G5-793-77A2 vs Predator 17 G9-793-775G

So I've contacted Acer Customer Services today with the question which one of those laptops is better. The staff at Acer wasn't helpful at all as he was avoiding the conversation and just sent me the links to datasheet Smiley Happy

So I decided to come here as from my own experience I know that community is always more helpful than any other customer service or the support. So back to the laptop itself.

As for the hardware, I know that those are virtually identical but still, there are some differences and I would want to make a good choice.

Predator 17 G9-793-775G has touchpad lighting, stripes and logo on the lid are backlit but those are the features that I don't care about at all.

But I do have some concerns about G-Sync as the G5 one does not have it (but some YouTuber actually says it has) would any of you guys have Predator 17 G5-793-77A2 and can confirm it? If it doesn't have G-Synch how it will impact my gaming and I must say a mainly play 3rd person open world games like GTA V, Mafia 3, Witcher 3 (hope this laptop can handle an hour or two of constant play). The other games I play, are simulators like CitiesSkylines (CPU intensive games yes I hope the laptop won't melt), Farming Sim 17, etc.

The other thing is HDD and I know that G9 has 7200RPM and G5 has 5400RPM one. It is not very important either as no one seriously is using HDD anymore. I've got some SSD waiting and also have some brand new HDD 7200RPM so don't care about the drives either.

But what is my concern is the Power Supply. G5s max output is 180W and G9 has 230W and this is probably because the G9 has more demanding (faster) HDD, more leds and lights (kinda Christmas tree), also additional Frost Core fan or something/space for the optical drive.

And the price of course... Actually (which is weird) the Predator 17 G5-793-77A2 is more expensive as Predator 17 G9-793-775G cost £30 less on Amazon.UK and this really baffles me...

So maybe you guys can give me some advice on which one would be better to buy. I thank you all in advance for any valuable input.

I don't know if the markets are different but here in NA the G5's I looked at did in fact have a G-Sync enabled panel. Actually the majority of 1060 laptops I saw did in fact have G-Sync. It only became dicey when I looked at models with a 1050ti that I had to do a double take. The G9's do have fans I think with a higher CFM flow rating than the G5. Think about it like this, the G9 chassis can contain anything from a GTX1060/6700HQ all the way up to a 7700K/GTX1070 combo. A lot of the hard parts are probably the same such as the fans so Acer has a flexible platform they can toss multiple combos of parts into. I think the 1060 is the only GPU option for the lower tier G5 so it makes sense it uses with a smaller PS and different fans. The fact is with the G9 Series you would have more cushion with a larger PS and a better cooling system but is that something you absolutely need and are willing to put up with the headache of swapping them out...well that is something only you can decide. Your G5 will work fine but the G9 is the better setup.

I'm really not seeing a reason to go with the G5 since you said the G9 is cheaper. The Frost Core is often considiered useless because it does not lower GPU nor CPU temps at all really but it does lower ambient temperature within the case itself which can prolong the life of other components and lessen the work load on the two main fans. My vote is to save money with the G9.

I was thinking that some one can point out what are the real advantages of G9 over the g5? What kind of features is it missing that would be crucial for a gamer like me?

I've already ordered G5 (by mistake) and I don't know if it is worth the hassle of cancelling the order (it has been already dispatched) and waiting up to 8 working days for the refund, and then re-ordering the G9 which is already the last one in stock and as we all know price on Amazon may go up.

Do you guys think it is worth the hassle? Should I go for the G9 one? Or just stick with the order since all the main specs are the same?

What about the difference in the power supply? G5 180W and G9 230W? Does it matter at all?

Honestly depends on how important the faster HDD and optical drive are to you. It sounds petty but you never know when you might need an optical drive for a disk especially if this will be your primary/only laptop. The FrostCore does make a difference that can be seen with thermal cameras too and the faster HDD will help with seek time for videos or whatever you store on the disk. I do not see any weight nor size difference (according to Amazon) between the two either so for me that would seal the deal with the 9. If you canceling the order would not lead to any kind of back charge or restocking fee then switching them out is something I would personally do.

Thank you for helping me out with the decision. I have a good SSD 256GB and 1TB 7200RPM laying around so I can stick them in no issue.

If it comes to additional charges then no there is none. The only drawback would be me waiting for the refund before I'll be able to order the G9 one. Which could take another 8 days.

Also, the G9 from the link is discounted and the last in stock. It is not sold by Amazon but only fulfilled by Amazon. And if it goes before I'll get my money back then it's gone. And then I would have to order directly from Amazon and it would cost me £100 more than I've paid for the G5. In that case is it still worth it to pay £100 for the G9 model?

As for the model itself. Does G9 be a newer version of G5? Very confused by this numbering Smiley Happy

Not worth the headache if you would have to wait eight days. The G5 designation I think is just what they use for their more cost conscious models since the G9's came out before even the release of the 10 series cards. The 792's are the previous gen of the G9 line with the 793's being the current model.

Do you think that Maximum Power Supply Wattage of 180W in G5 compared to 230W in G9 would have any impact on my experience? Or Laptop's performance?

The 230W PS seems to be standard on the G9 17's cause that is what I have with my GPU being a GTX1070 and it only increases to 330 watts for the 17 X GTX1080 models which also have a CPU that can be OC's as well. It would be a better business practice for Acer to do this than to make a PS tailored for each specific GPU line. They're a big company so I would not worry as I doubt they would let a model roll out of quality control with an insufficient PS.

I personally don't care about (Christmas tree lightening) backlit colours but in the last comment in this topic, it seems that there is some comparison (in German) in regards to both models. My main concern would be the G-Sync and the cooling technology.

It appears that the cooling technology on those laptops is different but I found videos on YouTube where someone tore both of them and the cooling system is the same, also the same person on YouTube proved that G5 actually has the G-Synch. Is that something that you aware of? Is that some mistake made by Acer in the description?
