Hello,

I own an aspire s13 ( s5-371) and I have this annoying problem :

1. With bios set to UEFI and booting from windows 10 :

When I open the lid to resume from sleep it will not work ( screen is black and I see a faint pulse about 1 sec frequency) . The only way to make it work is to open the lid to somewhere between 30-45 degrees, the screen then lights up , and it will work . I can then extend it to the position I want.

Also , on numerous occasions , restarting and shutting down produce the same effect. Black screen, so I need to resort to opening the lid slowly.

2.With bios set to Legacy and booting ubuntu 16.04:

There are no issues.

Which makes me think if this is a bios issue . I updated to latest bios version (2016/12/20 ) but the problem is still there. I also updated all the drivers ( however I see no point in doing that, since the issue also occurs before booting windows 10 )

One last thing : Sometimes, resuming from sleep and opening the lid to 90 degrees messes up the graphics, to a 800X600 resolution, that prompts an error from the display driver (  igfxem Module )

UPDATE :

Using windows event viewer, I can see some warnings / errors associated with the screen problem :

Warning - Intel.OrientationSystemDate :  Sensor interface not found after 11 tries

Warning - BTHUSB : A command sent to the adapter has timed out. The adapter did not respond.

Could you explain this a bit further: "open the lid to somewhere between 30-45 degrees". The screen turns off when the lid is closed but an external monitor should stay on

If I have an external monitor, yes , that does work indiferently. But the notebook monitor only works if i slowly open it to the point where ( I assume ) the lid sensor is located. It's almost as if it takes a while to read the info from that sensor .

To be more specific, if I open the lid normally , normal speed to normal reading position (110 degrees ) , then the screen does not turn on, and I see some very dark gray pulses at 1 second intervals.

For this not to happen ( after 50 or so tests ) I have to , as I mentioned earlier, raise the lid up to the point where the sensor picks up the fact that it must wake up from sleep. I see the monitor working, and then I can extend the lid to the normal position

Meanwhile , I see this error popping up as well :

    Error DistributedCOM    - eventID 10016

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
    and APPID

So I think I have narrowed it down. Apparently, the lid switch is causing issues. However, I have no idea why this happens only on Windows. Could it be that there is a sensitivity setting for the lid sensor that is different on Ubuntu ? Does anyone have any idea regarding this?

    As a follow-up :

I have sent it for it repairs at our local warranty shop. Turns out that both the motherboard and the lcd cable were broken. That's what's written on the repair notice. Got it back after 2 weeks, then it turns out that the webcam isn't working anymore. I went back to the shop were they diagnosed it again:

Motherboard at fault yet again. They requested a new motherboard, and it this point I told them that I am no longer comfortable with this laptop quality wise. However, acer pressed on that they will replace it and that's that. I will write a complaint about this, as I find it unacceptable to have to go through weekly chats with the repair shop, asking about status.

Shame though, it really felt like a nice little machine.

I have the same problem with my laptop since about winter 2019. The screen does not come on restart (I have to do all the tricks the author of this topic described) and camera stop working when I use Skype and turn the lid.
Has anyone also encountered this problem? May be you found the way to fix it? I know that I should go to authorized service but I don't have time now to wait several weeks when my laptop will be fixed.
