Just bought this new Aspire T3-710 and the dvd is showing up as a CD drive with a driver dated 6/21/2006.

It shows in the hardware as a Slimtype DVD A DA8A6SH; so I assume there is a new driver that will make the drive do dvd. Help!

Driver date is correct and it's the stock Microsoft driver, nothing wrong.

have you tried to read a DVD?

probably it's just a wrong icon label

Nero 2016 will not let me burn a DVD, because it shows it as a CD-rom device. Also the device in Windows 10 shows it as CD device not a DVD

ok, it's time to update the BIOS:

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_R01.A4_A_A.zip?acerid=636023526550201861&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20T3-710&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6#_ga=1.128984524.1726682513.1446488832

First of all you need to disable secure boot:

    http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27072

then boot to windows, unzip the downloaded file and browse inside the BIOS WIN folder, then run Flash.bat (if your OS is x86 or 23 bite version) or Flash_x64.bat (if your OS is x64 or 64bit version)

    follow on screen instructionts.

once you updated the BIOS, enter again BIOS pressing Del key, then press F9 (to load defaults) and F10 (to save and exit)

boot to windows and check if it's still CD or DVD

Did the Bios update and still is showing as a CDrom device. Nero will not allow me to write to it as a DVD

    No more ideas.
Give Acer support or your seller a call.

Gave Acer support a call and they stated that I needed to contact Nero to fix the problem. I asked what software supports there DVD drive. And they did not know. Finally, after searching the Web, I found that Imgburn could write to the DVD drive. As it turns out Nero and the other software could read a DVD, they just could not write to it. ACER hardware and software is cheap, but you get what you pay for.
