Forgot Log-in Password

My sister purchased a V5-561-8401 and she cannot remember the password. She says she didn't get a box or any discs, other than a Vivitar Image Manager disc. There is nothing on the computer to save, but I have not been able to do a restore on it. There seems to be an issue with it not booting properly. It will often begin and then click off, when I am not doing anything but waitng for it. The battery needs to charge. When it boots it seems solid. I do not know the version of WIndows which is installed. The mfg date is 2012-09-14.

I would be grateful if someone can help. I have read some ideas about how different Windows version might restore, but I don't know which version is installed, whatever it shipped with, I suppose.

I would be grateful for whateevr help might be out there.

If the password is a Windows password then you can try restoring the system using the ALT+F10 recovery for Windows 8.1. Steps on this are posted here:

If this does not resolve the issue or the system will not restore, chances are the hard drive is bad and needs to be replaced. Acer can offer repair at a flat rate, which depends on the serial number of the system. Or you can take the system to a local repair shop to see if they can replace the hard drive for you. To reinstall the Acer OEM operating system you can purchase the recovery media from the Acer online store at:
