How to reset bios of Aspire TC-780 (U3E1) to recognize second HDD

Having installed Samsung SSD evo 850 as boot drive, I disconnected the DVD and installed the original I TB HDD in its place (#2 SATA). Now, the BIOS still is listing the DVD as the second device and Windows 10 sees it in the disk manager as Offline. Can I reset the bios to recognize the second HDD in the place of the DVD? Do I have to reset the BIOS to get Windows 10 to see the HDD as online?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

you don't need to set priority boot list to be able to boot from an USB flash drive, you can set just it for your convenience but normally i prefer to press F12 key at boot and select the proper bootable device from the list (so i can double check if USB flash drive is recognised by BIOS).

Once booted from the USB recovery media, you can select to restore from a system image and point to the HDD to recover the system image. Smiley Happy

about creating a recovery USB flash drive:

    windows logo key

    type

    recovery

click on create a recovery drive

    follow onscreen instructions.

you can also avoid to create a recovery media and download "on the fly" (if you have a good data connection) the latest windows 10 installation media.

disconnect the AC power cable, open PC case, look inside for a silver round battery, take it off.

press power button twice and wait 5 minutes then put everything back and boot to BIOS, this normally reset CMOS.

    Ironfly,

    Thanks for your consistent help!

I did as you suggested and here is what I am now finding. On the BIOS tab that lists what is connected to SATA #2, I see my Samsung SSD and on SATA #3, I see my ITB Seagate (original HDD that came with the computer). (Nothing on SATA 0)

But when I go in the BIOS to the Boot Order menu, I see the options for the second boot possiblity:

        Windows Manager

        CD/DVD

        Removable Device

Lan          It doesn't offer me the second hard drive or am I supposed to pick the Windows Boot mgr again?

It must not be seeing the HDD or am I misunderstanding this? I want to backup the system that is now on the SSD to the HDD in case of failure of the SSD. Then, my thought is, I can restore the system back to whatever device will be the boot. Does this make sense? Thanks, again, for your help.

HDD is correct on older BIOS, on UEFI it's windows boot manager.

but be aware that if your OS is still installed on HDD, is not the best way to have it on both SSD and HDD; it's better to wipe the HDD to avoid boot managers conflict.

about restoring: backup to HDD is one good way to do it but...remember that you need at least a recovery media or download a windows 10 installation media, boot from it and then choose to restore your system from backup (system image).

    Ironfly,

    You are Johnny-on-the-spot!

I have done as you said and removed the OS from the original HDD and will prepare restore media and make a system image on the HDD.

But, as far as telling the BIOS to boot from the next device after SDD failure, should I pick removable media and then make a usb recovery flashdrive to start things, referring then to the HDD for the system image?

Since I am new to Windows 10, where is the utiliity to make a flashdrive recovery media located? Thanks, again.
