My AM3470 Hard drive (6GB DDR3, 1TB) is dead, and I have no back-up disks.  Can I buy a new SSD drive and re-load Windwos 10 OS from scratch?

    why not? Smiley Happy

check if SATA is set to AHCI on BIOS.

just keep in mind that SSD speed will be capped by SATA II speed but for sure way better than your old HDD.

You mean after I load the Windows 10 OS?

I’ll take any advice you have on selecting an SSD device that would be compatible with this box.  I’m mainly doing this as a learning project with my kid, and then I’ll turn it over to him to be his gaming box.  Thanks!

no AHCI must selected prior any installation, so you need to boot your PC pressing Del key, enter BIOS and check about SATA settings.

honestly i don't have a specific suggestion, any SSD like Samsung, Trascend, SandDisk can be good for your system.
