Sounds like you are running low on space. Try freeing up space, you are targeting 18+GB free for smooth upgrading. If you have one of the 32GB models we're liable to have to jump through more hoops.

My problem also.... no space to upgrade.  And.... if you try to load windows without the recovery USB you no longer have a mouse.  What is going on ?  Yes, have the pitiful 32gb

So the easiest way (and even then it's often not easy) to upgrade a machine with too little space is to use an SD card, not a USB stick, and download the update file to it. It you then fire up the update off that card it'll use the card for temporary space. You'll still need several GB free oin the HD, but not the full 18GB or so needed by a normal update.
