Loss of CD/DVD Driver on Upgrading to Windows 10

I have a Gateway All-in-One Model ZX4270 which I have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10. All is OK except that I apparently lost my CD/DVD drive in the process. It is still physically there, and it spins a disk when one is inserted, but the computer doesn't recognize the drive. It isn't shown on File Explorer. Based on advice from the Microsoft forum, I first ran the Troubleshooter (no effect) and then uninstalled the driver from the Device Manager and rebooted, but no new driver was installed. I've looked on the Acer web site for a new driver to download, but none seems to be listed. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I'm sorry but I'm out of ideas. I'm not sure if altering the registry will help or cause problems.

I might even consider purchasing an external DVD and then connect it to a USB port.

Most of the forum members with AMD based computers that have a missing DVD/CD go to the AMD support website and download the drivers.

Look for AMD Chipset, AHCI, USB 3.0 and RAID Drivers

Download the appropriate driver 32 bit or 64 bit. I'm not sure if you have 32 bit or 64 bit. And I'm not sure my suggestion will work for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response. I downloaded the suggested driver from AMD to my Download Folder and then re-booted the computer, but the driver did not install, and the Device Manager still shows no CD/DVD device (since I uninstalled the original one in an earlier attempt to fix the problem). Is there something more that needs to be done to enable the downloaded driver to be installed? I didn't quite understand the advice in the earlier posting that you linked to, that, "After installing AMD Chipset Drivers and system reboot update drivers for Standard ATA controller - replace it with driver from AMD." Can you explain this, please?

What did you download? Crimson chipset driver package? 32 bit? 64 bit?

Was it an application?

Did you double click it?

If you have a friend that is a little more computer savvy....maybe they can help you install the crimson driver package.

OK, until seeing your question above, I had assumed that the downloaded driver should install automatically upon rebooting. In answer to your question, what I downloaded was the AMD Chipset Drivers Package for Windows 10/8.1/7 (64 bit), Crimson Edition 16.9.2. I have now run the installer by double-clicking on it in my Download folder, and I’ve rebooted the machine. The Device Manager now shows “AMD SATA Controller” under “IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers”, lines that were not there before, but still no CD/DVD drive is shown in File Explorer, and the computer still does not respond when disks are inserted.

I have found on another forum, http://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/16301-windows-10-my-dvd-cd-drive-not-recognised-all.html, a recommended patch to address this problem, but I am a bit reluctant to tamper with my Registry unless it is the only option.

I think you're right about the external drive. I hadn't realized they were so inexpensive, considering how much time might be required and how much hassle might result from continuing trying to revive the existing drive.
