Acer aspire all in one z5761

My 5 year old acer will not boot up when switched on. On switch does not light up but light bar at base of screen flashes intermittently in tandem with light on dvd drive. With each flash there is a faint whirring noise. This is a repitition of the problem i had several months ago which mysteriouly rectified itself. Now it has returned. Suggestions please. Hawkeye
