P253-M Network Intermittent

I have a Travelmate P253-M, running Windows 10. In the last week (I'm guessing since another forced windows update) I've been having a problem where the network connection drops out after some time of normal use (sometimes an hour and a half, sometimes less). I use the wired Ethernet Connection, but it appears to be the same with the wireless (which i tried in lieu of the wired one).

The driver is the latest version direct from broadcom (Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet: NetLink 57xx (x64) version: 15.6.0.14 - although it is dated a year ago).

There doesn't appear to be anything that causes it to drop out - it just stops.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Thom

Sometimes it's not easy to determine if the problem is with your ISP, your router, or your computer or something else.

There's a couple good articles below.

    Thanks Jordan,

The other computers on the netqork are all fine, which would suggest that the ISP and router are fine and I've tried all the other suggestions in the article (latest drivers - which were already installed and working fine for months, uninstalled and restarted etc) but so far to no avail, which is why I'm confused.

I think it must be to do with this particular computer, but I've done everything I can think of to try to fix it. I wondered if anybody else had had problems in the last week or so and found an alternative driver (for example)

Luke Adams is using a different driver for Anniversary.......

You can also check to see if there is a newer BIOS than what you have.

Try logging in with a different user, it might just be something corrupted in the profile.

If Billsey's suggestion works, then you might be able to log back in and use the new feature (Network Reset) they added to Windows 10 Anniversary......which should delete the network profiles and any low level settings.

if you have Radio Controller intalled in pc. Just look in device manager this would fix the problem.. I found the solution to my problem I've for 5 hours to see  if the problem is still persist but it didn't,  Before I upgrade my pc to Anniversary updates,it just come to my mind and I remembered, I've downloaded a driver in www.driverscape.com for my pc that was intended to update my keyboard driver but it was for the physical switching of radio on/off of the pc wireless connection. It was the  Radio Controller Driver. When I remebered it. I went to Device Manager --> Human Interface Devices --> Find the Radio Controller --> right click properties --> Goto Power Management --> Unchecked allow this device to save power... That's it. Your wifi will disconnect any more by itself.. The only problem left is that the wifi indicator still not showingit good accurate range of wifi signal but its ok I just have to wait for another updates from microsoft to officially fix the problem.

    Hi everybody,

Thanks for all your help so far. I'd tried a lot of that already, but I've tried evrything else and am still having problems.

It is the wired connection that I use primarily (although I checked it with WiFi and got the same results), so it isn't a radio problem etc.

All the other computers on the same network are fine (some are wired and some Wifi).

I've tried different drivers, different user profiles, different routers, different cables ... everything I (and you all) can think of and still have the same problem. Yesterday it did last nearly 4 hours without going off, but then it did and the only way to restore it is to reboot.

I am out of ideas. Incidentally, today it also said that the connection to the NAS drive couldn't be restored as the device name was already in use. I rebooted with no luck, and then disconnected the connection so that I could re-map it, but now it can't 'see' the NAS drive at all. It can see other network connections (other PCs etc), but not the NAS Drive and at this point it can access the internet. The other PCs can all access the NAS with no issue and are not having any network connection issues at all.

The NAS issue may be un related, but it seems to have had some sort of meltdown!!

Thanks again for all your help, and any other suggestions would be glady received.

    Hope you're all well

    Thomnorman,

Windows 10 Anniversary presented some new issues for many users.  I had some USB problems that I was able to resolve by uninstalling my graphics driver and then letting Windows automatically installing the driver it wanted (crazy huh?)  Smiley Happy

I wasn't confident about you getting you network issue resolved so that's why I included instructions on how you could install the previous version of Windows 10.

There's three main version of Windows 10:

    1. Threshold1 (July 2015)

    2. Threshold2 (November 2015)

    3. Redstone1-Anniversary (August 2016).

    Thanks Jordan,

Is there a way to go back a version now that the roll back option has expired (which they helpfully reduced from 30 to 10 days with the AU)?

If the Hail Mary safe mode instructions below don't work, then I don't think you can get back.  At least not without starting over.

Can you PING the NAS ? I am thinking something may have turned off sharing.

    Thanks Padgett,

Good thought, I tried and I can. Also if I enter the IP in the browser I can access the settings. However, then I checked and file sharing is on, and as I said previously, I can access (most of) the other computers on the network, and they can all access the NAS

You can try one of the USB adapters.

At this point a network sniffer would be very handy however the original NFS uses TCP/UDP 111 and 2049. Exactly how depends on which version (2,3,4) of NFS you have but a quick test would be to turn the Windows firewall OFF and try to connect.

addendum: did find this which seems to have worked for me but have no way to test.

ps this worked on Windows 10 Pro but gave an error on Home.

    Spoiler

Must have admin priv. Order is important.

    dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureNameSmiley FrustratedervicesForNFS-ClientOnly

    dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NFS-Administration

    dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:ClientForNFS-Infrastructure

    Thanks Jordan,

Due to where it is in the office, the Wifi signal is rarely brilliant, and it's never moved, so I use the wired connection rather than the Wifi, so it's that that I'm trying to get to work.

Ok, I'll give you one last potential workaround and then I'll be out of ideas.

Since your P253-M isn't on the list of devices that support Windows 10 Anniversary, I'm not sure how much time I would spend on it.  There's a reason it's not on the list and that very well may be the reason.

    Thanks for all your help.

Does that mean that forced windows updates are going to render hardware obsolete every couple of years as well? This is going to get expensive!

I'll let you know if I find anything, but I think I may be coming to the same conclusion

    Thanks again all

    You're welcome.

Technically, your P253-M is not supported by Acer for any version of Windows 10.  It didn't even make the supported list for the original release of Windows 10 from July 2015.

    http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/windows10-eligible-models

I'm not sure if you were previously using Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro, but I think Windows 8.1 Pro is a pretty good OS.  If it ever gets to the point where I have go back to Windows 8.1, I'll be fine.  (All of my devices are Haswell Windows 8.1 devices).

And yes, I think PC sales are slow.  Smiley Wink (I'm kidding).  But there's not a lot of profit supporting 4 year old devices for an operating system that was never designed to run on your/my hardware.   I can't say that I blame them.
