Acer Aspire ES1-111M-C3CP

A year ago my laptop stopped working and gave me an error message; 'No Bootable Device'. It constantly shows that message everytime I turn it on. When I go into BIOS, I get PAST THE PASSWORD SECTION, however I cannot change any of the settings. For Example If I go to change UEFI to Legacy, I cannot do it. I have tried to boot to softwares such as Linux and Windows, both have failed. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with your computer model.....

But if you're trying to clean install Windows 8.1 or 10, use my posts in the link below as a guide.

If you're trying to install Linux and you have InsydeH20 UEFI, then use my posts in the link below as a general guide.

If you need recovery media you can get from Acer....

I did check and you do have Insyde H20 UEFI.

The link below discusses how to add a trusted boot entry to the secure boot for UEFI linux installation.  You do need to create a supervisor password first though.  But you don't want to disable secure boot.  It won't work if you disable secure boot (at least not for a UEFI installation of Linux).  If you need non-UEFI Linux then you must create a supervisor password and then you'll be able to disable secure boot and choose legacy mode.

If you still can't get it to work or something to boot, then you might have some kind of hardware problem.

Oops, and I forgot to mention that if your ES1-111m came with windows 8.1, it probably came with Windows 8.1 with Bing and the link below won't work with the Bing version of Windows.

  • What do you mean by you "get PAST THE PASSWORD SECTION"?

When I say 'Get past the password section', I'm just stating that I don't need to reset the password or anything like that. It's just everytime I've post a similar topic on another website, I've had replies telling me to reset the password and then it's all fixed. *My problem is not with my password*

The problem is I can't change any settings INSIDE of BIOS. I type in my password, it's fine. I come up to the tabs, where I can scroll through settings, except I cannot change anything; **for example**, if I wanted to change my password, I would be able to because it won't let me access its setting. (Every option that is changable is greyed out; so I can't change it.)

Ok if it's not a password problem like in link below.........then I don't know what the problem is.  Hopefully Philetus can help you sort it out.

  • You seem to be saying you can change your password, but you can't.

When you start your computer, do you have to enter a password? or only to access bios?

When you have Set Supervisor Password highlighted, with the arrow keys, and you hit enter, what does it do?

    Just answer these questions first.

    Ok, so;

    1. When I start my computer, it boots past the Acer logo, and comes up with an error saying 'No bootable device', and nothing else happens, I can only turn it off and on. I can access BIOS, but it won't let me change anything.

    2. I cannot change anything in BIOS, only sroll through the settings.

Did you get a chance to read through the entire link below? Because it sounds like the same issue that they had.

Ok, so this worked. I managed to reset the BIOS and now I can change things. The only problem I have left is that I load my laptop up, and it says 'No Bootable Device'. I have no idea how to fix that.

If you accidentally installed Windows in legacy mode, then you'll have to re-enable legacy mode to be able to boot the OS.

If you didn't install Windows in legacy mode, then you can try loading the BIOS defaults (F9) and then save/exit (F10).

If you want to just start completely over, I guess you could just load the bios defaults and re-install Windows.  If you've switched back-n-forth between legacy mode and default EFI mode, then a lot of people use rufus with the settings UEFI GPT fat32 ISO to force a default UEFI/GPT installation of Windows.  And you may need to wipe the drive with diskpart clean to completely start over fresh.  Please see my previous posts on page 1.  Vanilla Windows 10 will work, but vanilla Windows 8.1 won't work if your computer came with the "Bing" version of Windows 8.1.

And you can always get your recovery media from Acer Store.

Philetus might have some other ideas because that's all I can think of at the moment.

Ok, so I tried all of those, and none of them worked. Thanks for trying though.

UPDATE: So, I when I hold ALT+F10 (Each time I boot up), I boot into Ubuntu OS, which was the last software I donwloaded. I'm going to find a way to boot into Windows.

Make sure you have the F12 boot menu enabled in the bios.

Hit the F12 key to bring up boot menu at the Acer screen when you turn on the computer.
