After installing windows 10 my system will no longer restart on it's own.  in order to reboot the system I have to select "shut Down" from the menu and do a reboot that way.  If left to reboot on it's own, the system will shut down and when the bios screen appears (where you can press delete to enter setup) it will freeze there and not move any further.  To fix that i then have to hold the power button for 10 seconds to shut off the machine and then restart.   Because of this i am finding installs (especially windows updates) failing repeatedly.  How do i fix this?

check if turning Off fast startup, can fix your issue:

Usually an Samson CO1-U mic and a Huion drawing tablet, but have disconnected both of them at various points (leaving the only things connected being  a Razer Naga mouse and a generic Microsoft keyboard)

Other than that no USB items

Try to restart with just keyboard.

worth a try to load default settings too on BIOS:

    enter BIOS

    press F9 and then F10

if it still hangs, check on BIOS the boot priority and put Windows boot manager as first bootable device and disable (if possible) the other boot devices.

I don't have boot manager as one of the options in the boot priority menu so have it set to my main hard disk

I had wondered if it might have something to do with the small partition which the OS was installed on when I got the system.  if that could be causing an issue.  The problem is.. The only way I know of to rid that partition is to do a total wipe on the Hard drive which I would rather not be doing.

Other than that, this whole issue is now interfering with the installation of Windows updates.  I have now tried at least half a dozen times to install the Win 10 anniversary update and each time it has failed and rolled back to the previous installation.

no, your HDD partitions are ok.

i suspect a sort of incompatibility between windows 10 and BIOS or some drivers but it's hard to narrow to a single issue.

just to double check, on device manager there is any yellow exclamation mark?

please tick "show hidden device" under "View" tab.

I have been considering that as an option.. or should i say a last resort. Even though i have done 2 resets (one keeping files, and one complete wipe) and the problem still persists regardless. or just hope for an official fix.  Or maybe just bite the bullet and start saving up for a gaming rig which has newer hardware in it that WOULD be supported by it's maker.

Infuriating in the mean time though

You can try also a clean install using the last windows 10 release that include the anniversary update.
