Reduced performance when plugged in

I am currently experiencing problems with my Aspire 5749 - 6663 Laptop. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My situation is as follows:

I am playing a game that runs fine on battery, but when I plug in my power cord, the game immediately slows down by about 50% (According to my own observation and a framerate monitor). I dont know for sure what IS causing this, but I have ruled out the following:

It is not my power plan settings. I have tried numerous tests with various power plans / advanced settings and nothing changes. It is worth noting that I can play the game better on Power Saver with battery power than on Maximum Performance with AC power!

It is not a faulty battery. The poor performance persists when battery is removed and running on external power. I got this laptop for Christmas 2012 besides, so it is not nearly old enough to warrant such an issue.

It SHOULD not be another process/Busy CPU. I have run the game simultaneously with Task Manager and Resource Monitor on, under all power plans on battery and external power. CPU usage does not alter significantly between any of these conditions. I know that sometimes this can be misleading as processes are hidden, if you (support) might know more on this than I.

It SHOULD not be a virus / malware / etc. I have run multiple full system scans via Norton 360 antivirus software all of which have come up clean. I have scanned under both normal and Safe Mode operating conditions, with external and battery power, and with the game on and off. As with checking the processes, I understand that this is not conclusive.

I have narrowed the problem down to either a faulty charger (I hope) or an internal hardware malfunction. It may also be the BIOS but I really do not want to mess with that until I have the blessings of someone from Acer. I am expecting to recieve a replacement charger any day now. In the meantime, is there anything I missed / can do to further help with this problem short of sending it in for repairs? Is this a known problem with Aspire Laptops?

Sorry for the long read, but I figured this will save a lot of Q&A time down the road.

Is it just the one game that has this problem, or do other games have the same problem? What game is it? I wouldn't think it was a problem with the charger, if the charger powers the computer and charges the battery.
