Update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1/10 fails 0x80070004

I think I have just about tried everything to get my Acer XC 105 to upgrade to either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

The error message is always the same: 0x80070004

I have followed a lot of manuals on this issue. Stopped and started services, deleted folders, deleted profiles.

At last I went ahead and put the system back to factory mode.

First the quick way, then the slow way, removing everything from the disk Windows was installed on.

A complete clean install, and still it doesn't work.

Windows 8 is up to date. Maybe some drivers or the BIOS needs updating before the upgrade to work, but I can't find if that is the case. Is there some tool that will take care of that automatically?

Edit: also went as far as switching memory banks.

I'm not really familiar with your computer model, but if you want to check which BIOS version you currently have:

1. Press the Windows key + the letter "R" on your keyboard.

2. type msinfo32 in the run box

3. click ok

I don't know exactly why you can't install Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 or if a BIOS update will help.

To update your BIOS....

1. Dowload P11.B3

3. Double click the Appendix folder and carefully read and carefully follow the instructions in the Win Flash Utility SOP v1.2 PDF file

Updated the BIOS, unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. I'll contact MS.

Ok.

You should create a USB factory default recovery drive before you proceed any further just to make sure that you can get back to Windows 8 if something goes wrong trying to install Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

Type "recovery" in the Windows 8 search bar. Usually you need either a 16 GB or 32 GB USB flash drive.

There's lots of posts on this forum with step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, but not sure if that's the problem or if that will help you.

Thanks for your reply. I took your other advise, contact Microsoft.

A 5 minute chat session solved the whole issue in a way I have not found anywhere on the internet.

It seems you can not use reserved words (system, local, network and such) when naming your computer. Not even translated versions. I am in the Netherlands, my computer was named 'lokaal' which can be translated to 'local' or 'classroom'. That was the problem.
