Oculus with GX-791 HDMI

I'm having trouble trying to use Oculus Rift (consumer version) with Acer Predator 17X GX-791 laptop. There are no error messages during the Oculus install process, yet the headset display stays black, with an orange light on the hmd. Anyone else having experience with this hw combo?

This laptop model has a full GTX980, not the M-version, and is advertised as VR-ready, so I'd think this is not the most common "HDMI goes through mainboard, not directly to gfx chip" thing. Also, Vive runs through the HDMI port without problems, and the Oculus headset works fine connected to my tower-PC via HDMI (GTX1080).

Thanks!

The GX-791 ships with a video adapter cable that converts DisplayPort to HDMI. Acer determined that the current Oculus Rift VR goggles need the adapter cable to work properly. Other VR headsets available as of July 2016 did not require an adapter cable. Make sure you are using the included adapter with the goggles.

There was no adapter cable included with the laptop. I bought it from Verkkokauppa.com in Finland.

Is there a way to get the adapter?

I've tried several DisplayPort - HDMI -adapters (including 4K compliant and even an active UHD one), but none of those have worked reliably.

    Good day,

I am experiencing exactly the same problem with a GX-791-782V when using the HDMI port and the latest 372.54 Nvidia drivers.

Unfortunately the support in Switzerland brushed me off saying that "VR Ready compatibility of ACER products is only guaranteed with an ACER headset". As far as I know, this headset is not even in the market yet... I would highly appreciate any other help in solving this.

Good news - I tried a USB-C to HDMI adapter and it worked! I hope @juhog sees this too. Smiley Happy

I still don't understand what is wrong (the HDMI seems to work with other devices), I hope it can be fixed in the future.

@kynthiathanks for the info on USB-C to HDMI adapter!

After trying several different types of DisplayPort to HDMI adapters, I was able to find a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter which almost works - after a few minutes the headset screen starts to go black for about a second every now and then. This then happens at increasing rate until the headset is unusable after being connected for about 7-8 minutes.

With a USB-C adapter, this problem doesn't exist? Good to know, although at this point I'm thinking about getting rid of this laptop. The support seems to be far less than optimal, local support had no idea if there was supposed to be an adapter with the laptop or not, and told me to get in contact with the retailer if there's something missing. Needless to say, the retailer had no clue about adapters supposedly included in the box either.

Besides, there's a new bunch coming with GTX 10-series GPUs which don't have problems with VR headsets.
