eRecovery Failure Error 0xFD; Need Options

I have and "Acer One 722-0473" that has been acting flaky for a while. [Win 7 Resource Monitor will not run, Win Update does not function, etc.] I am considering an upgrade to Win 10, but I want to create a USB recovery disk that will restore he system to its original state before proceeding. I might even restore the system prior to the upgrade attempt.

When I run eRecovery and attempt to create the USB recovery device I get "Backup Failure Error code: 0xFD". I'm looking for all alternative that I can consider.

Can anyone tell me what "Error code: 0xFD means?

Can I restore the system to factroy condition directly from a hidden partion on the hard drive? If the system contains the files necessary to create the recovery drive is seems logical that recovery from the hard drive is possible.

Can I create the recovery USB drive by first booting to a linux/WinPe emergency USB drive? Are there generic tools/utilities for that purpose?

Can I get a recovery disk/USB drive from anywhere that would restore my system to its factory condition?

I have donloaded the drivers and apps from the Acer Support site, if all other avenues are blocked, should I consider just doing the Win 10 upgrade without a paracute?

Any suggestions beyond the above specific questions will be appreciated.

The flakyness could be due to a rootkit. Rootkits are notorius for breaking Windows Update (and many other things).

Generally, the best way to defeat a rootkit is to wipe your hard drive (or solid state drive) with diskpart clean and then use your recovery disks on your clean drive.

You could take the gamble on going for an upgrade to Windows 10 without a plan B. Not sure if I would without a plan B.

You could also try to check for rootkit with malwarebytes free edition. Use the "custom scan" and check the rootkit box.

Edit: Now that I think of it, I don't think alt + f10 will work if your computer came with windows 7.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked the link for purchasing recovery media from acer and they do offer a recovery CD option. My system does not have any optical drive and I would perfer a USB recovery option. Is there a way to create a bootable recovery USB drive from the CD/DVD's that Acer will provide?

I called Acer support and found out that they will send a USB drive if necessary based on the SNID number I provided. Thanks again for you help.

I would probably call them and ask for a USB. I don't know if that's possible, but worth a shot. If they said no, I guess I would just borrow or purchase an external DVD drive.

I'm not aware of any way for you to convert the DVD recovery to USB.

While poking around the windows 7 recovery options I found that there is a link to "Advanced recovery methods" from the Recovery procedure in the control panel. When I followed that link I found two options: "Use a system image created earlier" or "Return your computer to factory condition". The latter mentions using a recovery image provided by the manufacturer.

Could this be refering to a recovery image hidden on the c: drive that is used Acer's eRecovery routine to create recovery media or is it refering to the USB recovery drive?

I believe that when it says "restore a system image created earlier".........it's referring to a system image that you created earlier by following the guide below.

If you choose "return your computer to factory condition", it should in theory return your computer to factory condition......assuming your recovery partition is still intact and nothing else is broken/corrupt.
