Laptop 8730 blue screen disaster, no safe mode, and Recovery disk not working

My Acer 8730 laptop was working perfectly last night.  I was prompted to download an update to Opera, the browser, and after i did that i shut my computer down.  Thismorning, it loads to a ble screen and advises me that an error has been detected and my computer is has been shut down to prevent damage, or words to that effect.  The message also suggests that I go into safe mode to remmove any program that may be causing problems. Yes, I thought to myself, that Opera download must be the culprit.  I'll load up in Safe Mode and remove it.

Only two times in 50 starts was i able to actually get into safe mode (I had to push and hold the FN and F8 keys to get it to load but man did it take a lot of tries).  Once in the screen that allows me to select Safe Mode, I select Safe Mode, and Windows files start loading, specifically the system 32 files.  These files load until they get to a file called disk.sys. At that point, the blue screen reappears.  No safe loading for me, apparently.

After the two failed Safe Mode attempts I decided it was time to try the restore disks I made when I bought my computer, but they do nothing at all,  Nothing.  Nada, zippo, rien.

So what's next for me?
