Predator 17 (G9-791) HDMI Out and Optimus

I know all the reasons not to run a Rift on a laptop, but with the i7-6700 and the 980m I'm confident that - based on others' posts - I'll be able to run Dreamdeck and maybe even Lucky's Tale. I thought it might be fun to use the laptop to show off the Rift to family who can't come by the house and try it out.

Has anyone tried running the Rift on an Acer Predator 17 (G9-791)?

I've run into a snag. Disabling the integrated GPU (to circumvent Optimus) seems to have disabled the external HDMI port. That's unusual, since in my experience the HDMI-out port is powered by the discrete graphics card. I can't figure out what I might be doing wrong or configuring improperly, so I'd love to know that someone else has already figured this out.

Hi,

I'm absolutely not a specialist here, but a big fan and a bit , because we just meet an area close to the minimum requirements. You can do some benchmarks to verify. But the minimum is on desktop usually the GTX 970, which is about 20% faster than this GTX980M. Some notebook producers have therefore taken the GTX980 desktop (mobile) version to reach more performance to be able to offer a product on this sector.

But it's quite sure you have some fun with other things than gaming. Maybe you get some headache. But it's a good thing to have a limit sometimes Smiley Wink

Well, there's no question that a laptop with those specs can run most titles currently on the Rift.

The problem is that it seems like the HDMI port is hard-wired to the Intel GPU, not the nVidia.

I really hope someone here knows if it is or, if not, how to access the HDMI if the Intel chip is off.

the display port is the nvidia and the hdmi the intel. maybe an adapter helps?

The occulus can only be plugged directly into an HDMI port.

One guy in another fhread was discovering that because he wanted ectendet functions of the NVIDIA Sound. So he plugged an Displayport to HDMI adapter and plugged in his HDMI cable of his multimedia system and all was fine.

That's not an option for you?

Sadly, no. For whatever reason, they designed the Oculus Rift in such a way that it can't be plugged into anything other than an HDMI port.

may be and you already tested it and it doesn't work, but just to be sure.

I thougt, no device will discover electrically that you just use an adapter to hdmi. Could you please acknoledge this, please. Sorry if I'm killing yor nerves. Smiley Happy
