which version of windows OS is installed?

to enter BIOS is F2 not Esc on laptops.

    please set UEFI back.

to enter recovery you need to press ALT+F10 at boot.

    to fix your error:

First of all try to check if ALT+F10 at boot take you to windows recovery and you can reach command prompt from there:
troubleshoot-advanced options- command prompt (if this works, go to point 4, if not point 1)

    1. create a vanilla Windows 8.1 installation media from this link:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

    2. Once you boot using the Windows installation disc, on the Windows 8.x installation window, click on Repair your computer.

    3. Click on Troubleshoot and in the Advanced options. First thing you may try is the Automatic Repair.

    4. If that does not help, then select Command Prompt. Enter the following four commands into the prompt.
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
Once the command completes, restart the computer.

when i press f12 on start up, i get shown the BSOD with File:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD error code: 0x0000185. it tells me to press (ESC) for UEFI firmware settings.

I have set UEFI as boot mode and secure boot is enabled. I am unsure which version of windows it is. I am not very technically minded.

No, when i press f12 it takes me to a blue screen with the above fault, if i press esc it takes me to BIOS which then has a boot list.

ok, on BIOS, set the USB flash drive as first bootable device; please check also if F12 boot list is enabled on BIOS.

press F10 to save BIOS and exit.

Hi, okay f12 boot is enabled and hdd FDD is selected as priority. There is now a boot manager screen opening which lists one option only. 1. WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100) when this is selected it takes me back to a blank screen and then to the original error code: 0xc0000034

ok, that means that USB flash drive you created is not set for UEFI BIOS.

    do this:

use the microsoft tool to download windows 8.1 again but select to download the .iso file instead of creating the USB media.

once downloaded the .iso file, download Rufus:

    http://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US

plug your USB, run Rufus, set it as on website image, click on the little Icon near ISO image and browse to the downloaded iso file.

double check the settings (sometimes they reset after loading an iso image), then click on start.

wait until it finish, then try to boot from your laptop pressing F12 and selecting the USB flash drive.

    download what?

Rufus just burns the windows iso file to the USB flash drive, nothing else.
