windows won't ask for password after sign-out and shutdown

machine is aspire R13, WIN 10

I've set up a OS password - on the machine, not using a windows account. After sign out and shut-down, opening the lid takes me right to the desktop without asking for a password. What good is a password if anybody can open the lid and have access to everything?

If instead of signing out and letting the computer go to sleep, it then asks for a password upon awakening - as if some unknown person will access the computer upon awakening from sleep. How stupid!

Is the reason for this is that microsoft is forcing me to use a MS account for sign-in in order to use my machine?

Solution from another forum was simple: change the password. Now it asks for a password after sign-out.

You may want to look under your settings...

Notifications, Then all settings, Accounts, then Sign-In Options... First Option is Require Sign- in make sure that is set to When PC Wakes from Sleep. See if that Helps

Edit: Sorry forgot there is also another place that may be unchecked and could make it so that you can get in without doing a password!!!! Right click the Start button, Then Control Panel, Power Options, Then System settings, there is a spot that will say. Password Protetion on wakeup. may need to make the Change there as well..

James - You misunderstand my quandary. The machine is NOT asking for a password. I WANT the machine to ask for a password. Otherwise, whats the use of having a password?

I DO want the machine to ask for a password after I sign out and shut down. I DON'T want the machine to ask for a password upon wake up.

Thanks for your attempt at helping, but it's not happening.

After you set up your test account, did you sign out, shut down, and then open the lid (laptop) or attempt to log back in? And were you able to do that without a password?

I don't want to change my user account. I don't want to open a different account. I just want password protection!

I logged in the test account and it made me use the password... I will remove the password. Then log in like you do now without one and see if I can change the account to require one. Not saying to change your account to a MS account. I am afk at the moment. I should return from store shortly

Ok, Home now... I have gone onto the Test User. And the reason I had to make a test user is so I could try and help you not because i was saying make a new user....

I took out the Password. restarted the computer and it didn't even give me a option to sign in a person becasue it was the last person it just went on and no password needed....

Then under the settings that I was telling you about in my post before... It now says that I have to make a password before I can change any sign on options....

I made a Password.. Back to my Test password again.... I then Logged out and shut the computer off. I turned it back on came to log in screen and then it asked what user i wanted to log in. Picked the Test and Put in the Password and then it was done... New password installed....

I guess I might want to say maybe the issue is that your account was set up without it being set a Admin... So go to your Control Panel, User account, Change account type. Click your account and then change user account type then make sure it is set to Admin.. Once that is done you should be able to change and add a password....

Nope. I am the administrator. I changed the properties for the power button and the "when I close the lid" selections to :shutdown for both the battery and plugged in. (the default was already set at sleep, which is NOT what I'm trying to accomplish). There are NO options to require a password after signout. I left the "password protection on wake up" to require a password. I then signed out and shut down, closing the lid. I then opened the lid and the 1st screen was the blue welcome screen with my name, then it went straight to the desktop - NO password was asked for.
It seems strange that Microsoft is so concerned with asking for a password after sleep, but not after signing out. I guess the only solution is to never sign out - just put it to sleep. Not too good for saving the battery though.
The other choice I have is to choose the Microsoft account sign-in, rather than a local account, which MS probably figured was a good way to force that selection.

Ok, So I hope to get a better understanding of what your trying to do.....

One you want your Machine to Ask you for a Password before it will let you into your Computer Desktop?

Two you don't want your Machine to ask for a Password once you have logged on with your password and your computer goes to sleep, and if you close the Lid (Which you changed settings to put your sytem to sleep)? So this would mean you could open the lid and No Password required.

Then to get a Better Idea of what is going on... In my First post I had you go to one of 2 areas where it could be set to not ask for a Password. Have you change it to ask for a Password if that is what you wanted. However you are saying that you don't want your system to require a password after sleeping so I am confused Really..

I wonder if you set your system not to shut down but to only sleep. Press power button set to sleep?

To Try and Help you Better here is what I have done tonight.

So I Thought maybe my Password for a NON MS account may have worked because I had it set up with a MS account as first type setup, and local was second user. So I took my Machine. Just got down backing IT up. Reformated my HDD and set up Win10 back on it. I went in and again as you said before you didn't want a MS account so you set up a NON account with a Password. So I have set up the Machine as a NON MS account (Local) with a Password... After all was installed and set up. I turned off the Machine. I then Press the Power button and it started. Came up to the Local Log in screen asking for a Password.. I put in my Password and it took me to the Desktop.... I gave it a few mintues and let it do a few Updates. I clicked on the Windoes Button (Start Button) Then Power, and Shut Down. It updated and then went off.. I then waited a few Min, Pressed the Power button and it came on. Installed Updates as it likes to do at times....Then to the Log on Screen. Where I had to put in a NON MS (Local Password) and then to the Desktop...... I then went to the Start button right clicked it and went to Log off It took me to the Log in screen. Here I put in my Password and back to the Desktop....

I am not sure why you have a system that is set up as your first post said with a NON MS account and password and yet it isn't asking for one....

When you are on your user account screen where you can set up to add a account. If you click on your name does it give you the option to change or add a Password?????? Was this computer New or Second hand? I only ask the last questoin because if it was Second hand and someone figured out a way to make it so a Password wouldn't ever work..... MS isn't trying to make you only have a MS account system.... Sure it would be best because of the Store for Apps and what not but They know that isn't 100% doable with Businesses and what not....

No matter how I have set up my system besides where I removed the password by changing the password to a Empty password.... However i was able to go and add it back after I logged back on without the need of one....

I haven't been able to get either of my system on a Fresh Install of Windows 10 (only a NON MS account made)..... or the first one where I added a new user. To ack like your describing your having with your system.

Well time to do a Factory restore back to 8. Then go through the Updates to get back to 10... Fun times ahead Smiley Happy again sorry i wasn't able to produce the issue you are having... Both my ways with a non MS account has worked with a Password.
