Introduction:

Ive searched around on the forums and havent found anything close enough to my problem to get me in the correct direction so I thought I would start a new post.

Problem and Background:

Had windows 8.1(64b) installed and the computer powered off normally. Rescently updated to windows 10 (without checking compatability) and started having an issue where the laptop does not power off when selecting "Power Off." The OS will appear to be powering off then the fans will kick up highspeed, the screen will go black, then the fans stop and the laptop remains "on." Most the time I have to hold the power button down for several seconds to get it back running again.

Attempted fixes:

  • Reverted back to windows 8.1 Pro with a "fresh install" from the OS itself (not using disks). I chose options to delete everything and start anew
  • Removed all security programs
  • Did a fresh install within Windows 8.1 to Windows 8 again chose to remove all my files
  • Updated from 8 all the way to 10 again installing every update available
  • Disabled fast boot and ensured Shut Down on Power Off was checked.

Community Plea:

Anyone have any suggestions on what has happened here?

I read Acer doesnt support this model with windows 10 and other sources claim that its a BIOS issue. Ideas?

you did all the right things to try to fix the issue, tried to update BIOS too?

if so....it can only be a BIOS or drivers compatibility, if drivers can be uninstalled-reinstalled.....we can't do anything about BIOS. Smiley Sad

My current BIOS version is V2.20 which is dated 02/18/2013. I went to the Drivers and Manuals page for my model laptop on Acers support section and the most rescent BIOS update is V1.15 dated 01/02/2014. This didnt make sense to me. I decided to try to flash the BIOS anyway  hoping maybe it was a fluke but InsydeFlash wont let me flash the BIOS since the one I am using is marked as a "older" version even though it has a newew timestamp. Thoughts?

What OS originally came factory pre-installed on your computer?

Updating the BIOS to v2.22 did the trick! My computer shutdowns properly now. Thank you very much for your helpful posts!

I have the same problem in my Aspire E5-571-35LV laptop.
Power on (Blue) light stays after shutting down.
will updating BIOS solve this problem?
    What update should I use?

     What should I download?

The latest 1.32 but you need to check your version first.
    Windows logo + r
    Type msconfig32

    Read BIOS DATE/version
If it's lower than 1.32, update it

    I have v1.16
I downloaded v.1.32 and installed it
Laptop restared and showed "error invalid firmware image - press any key to reset"

    My BIOS is still 1.16
    What should I do?

I'm having this not shutting down error after I changed Legacy boot to UEFI boot after a full Windows 10 installation from Windows 7. I also converted my MBR HDD to GPT type via 3rd party software

you have the 5.3mb version, so your BIOS is already the latest.

by the way, since this is a M5-481 discussion, i suggest you to start a new discussion for your model

I again tried 1.27 and it was successful.
    Thanks in advance
I'll check whether that issue resolved or not
    Thanks again
