battery won't charge, blinking orange 5 times

Acer Aspire 5742z-4685

The laptop is a bit over92 years old.  It worked fine last week.  The battery was not getting weak so it doesn't seem to be an aging battery.

I've tried the static thing...taking the battery out, pressing for x seconds--no go.  Also the laptop  does not run  with the battery removed.

The battery ran down and the computer shut itself off.  Then I suspect it shut itself down DURING an auto Windows 7 update.  It gave me an error message and said it would fix itself after shutting on/off a few times.

It never started after this "repair."  It simply blinks orange upon pressing the power button.

I suspect something got totally corrupted shutting down during an update.  It may have shut down during an update twice.

Should (and how to) I go back to original bios, and naturally I'll have to buy a copy of Win 7 or XP and load it anew since I never made backup disks.

I don't want to buy a new battery to find that is not the cause and if the battery was the issue I'm told it will run with the battery out by using the brick.  It doesn't.

So how to start as though it's a newly assembled computer?

Can anyone point to how to do this?  Thanks

It sounds like something has happened to either the adapter or the internal components if the system will not operate plugged into AC without the battery.

This does not sound like a software issue, but a hardware issue that will likely only be resolved by contacting your local service or customer care.
