gateway ne5649u updated windows 8 to 8.1, keep losing internet connection

I have a Gateway NE56R49u which came with Windows 8, I had problems with keeping the wifi connection so Gateway support had me update the driver to an Atheros instead of the Broadcom and it solved the problem. Every time I refreshed my computer I would have to re-install the Atheros network adapter.

I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and now have a Broadcom network adapter again and keep losing internet connection. I have tried to install the Atheros on the Gateway driver download page for my computer and operating system but it will not install, I just keep getting the crappy Broadcom driver. I tired updating the driver, uninstalling the Broadcom and install Atheros, tried the compatibility mode, etc. I cannot get it, only Broadcom and my connection sucks! Help.
