Hi to everybody!

I own an Acer 5940G equiped with Intel i7-720QM. Because of a Graphic card Failure (overheating) I now want to replace my CPU with the i7-640M which has integrated graphic card. However, I do not know if my BIOS version supports the new CPU because it is newer (BIOS Version 1.07, June 2010) (640M release date Sep 2010).

Could someone please answer me if it is possible to apply such a replacement and if so, do I need BIOS update?

I am looking forward for a quick response because I am out of my precious laptop.

Thank you all

George

    2 DDR3 1066MHz (4GB Total)

  • Hello,

Your laptop is equipped with the Mobile Intel PM55 Express chipset. It supports both processors.

The memory modules DDR3-1066MHz are compatible with both processors but I have a little doubt with Intel HD. The only risk is that the bios doesn't recognize the new one (µcode). Sorry I can't help you more.

    Remarks:

    Intel i7-720QM: Quad core - 45W

    Intel i7-640M  : Dual core - 35W

    Thanks for your time!

Do you suggest to proceed to such a movement? What do you mean by ''bios does not recognise μcode'')

Power consumption difference is a problem?

If the processor is cheaper, it's a little risk worth taking.

You could read this Intel topic.

    No problems.
