R13 R5-471T-52EE; screen too small?

I've noticed that when applications open, they seem to be maximizing windows slightly larger than the viewable area of the screen, like the lcd isn't displaying the full resolution the graphics card is rendering... it's actually even an issue with Windosws, the small desktop button to the right of the time/date block in he task bar is barely visible. It gets worse when I connect an external monitor via HDMI... the start menu is partially off screen, and the close/restore/minimize buttons and scroll bars are partially missing or obscured by the task bar when windows are maximized. I've played with monitor settings, but I'm at 1920X1080, the "optimal" resolution. Any help would be appreciated. Machine is great otherwise.

Im using this model and the window size is fit perfectly.

Could you give some examples of the applications that you feel like that.

Btw I've notice that my screen has light leak at the edge of the screen, espacially at the beginning with ACER logo (as the attached pic). Is it the same as yours. Im just wondering that if it the defective or "style" of this model.
