A501 not responding to screen taps

Hi,

 

I have had this tablet for a few months now but recently I find it is locking up ie it just fails to respond to screen taps.  If I then for example press the off button, it will ask if I want to shut down, but I cannot touch to answer.  I can then force shut down holding the off button for a while and when I turn it on it works again, but often after a while the same thing then happens again.  Also even though I have settings to recognise portrait or landscape position, it is stuck in portrait. 

 

Any suggestions?  I'm thinking of just re-installing the Android O/S but not sure how to do this or whether it would void my warranty.
