So I already did the free upgrade to windows 10 but I did a bunch of tweaks that I decided to do a fresh install again. I did a factory restore which installed windows 8. I did all the updates and now im in windows 8.1. Its only been a day since then and Im not seeing the windows update kb303something nor the windows free upgrade app.

Just start installing updates, it'll get there.

How important are the optional updates? One optional update that I ignore is the one for intel. When I install that it gives me the yellow for dptfsomething

I would expect that the Intel driver updates aren't completely critical, though be aware that they'll be updated when you do the Windows 10 upgrade anyway. Perhaps some diagnostics on why you get the yellow mark when it's installed would be worthwhile separate from the issue of why you are not being offered the upgrade.

Go to Windows Update and look at Update History to verify KB3035583 has been installed. That is the one that should give you the upgrade prompt.

I have the kb3035583 and kb297978 windows update but I don't still see the windows app icon. Maybe if you already upgraded before it will not show any icon. I just did a factory restore.

One of the machines I upgraded had to be set back to 8.1 to remove a problematic VPN client. After reinstalling all 8.1 updates (lots and lots and lots of them, took several reboot cycles) the upgrade icon showed back up.

You might try “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” from an Administrator command prompt to see if that forces the issue.

Thanks for replying. Ill wait for the icon. How long did you had to wait after the last update till the icon shows up again?

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, but only for the first year of its existence. if you do all the important updates will you get the windows app icon again in the taskbar of windows 8.1

IIRC the icon showed up within 24 hours, but YMMV. The command prompt suggestion should force the issue if you are otherwise set.

I just tried the media creation tool. Windoqs 10 installed but I'm having problems. When youre on desktop mode and clicked on the search bar in the taskbar some words are not showing. But when I first upgraded via windows icon I did not have that problem. Im going to factory restore again if Im not able to fix it

Check your display font setting and screen scaling. There are some combinations that confuse applications.
