Hello. I have a ACER E1-522 laptop and I am also wondering how to use those green characters. I have tried the method suggested, but it does not work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

What is your keyboard language set to?

My keyboard language is set to ENG US. I've tried switching to the CMS (Canadian Multilingual Standard) as well. Neither seem to do the trick.

The only AltGr characters available on UK keyboards are the broken bar '¦' and the Euro symbol '€'.
You can obtain many 'non standard' characters by using Alt codes instead.
For example, to obtain '¼' you would key 'Alt' 172 - press and hold 'Alt', press and release '1', press and release '7', press and release '2', release 'Alt'.'½' would be Alt171.
You can find a list of Alt codes at: http://www.alt-codes.net/

That helps a little bit, thanks. I guess the green keys are pretty much useless for me though, if I'm just going to have to use the "alt" codes anyway. I wonder if there is some special driver that I need to make these green keys usable?

The green keys are available on the system as it was shipped in Canada, I'm presuming from your settings.
English US does not support those keys.
It is likely that you would need to change to Canada French or Canada French (Legacy).

Thanks, but the only language options I seem to have for my keyboard are the ones I've already mentioned: English US and English CMS (Canadian Multilingual Standard).

Go to Control Panel
Click Region and Language
Click the Keyboards and Language tab
Click Change Keyboards
Click Add button
Select the language you would like to add by putting a checkmark in the box.
Example:
English (Canada)
- Keyboard
- Canadian French
- Canadian Multilingual Standard
- US
Once it is installed, you can select it as the default language in the dropdown box for "Default Input Language".
