S7-392 won't boot

My Aspire S7 392 was bought in June 2014. Last night it stopped booting. 

 

When plugged in, the red battery light flashes. Pressing the power button will bring on  the blue power light, but the screen remains dark. After a minute the fan starts up, quite loudly. Until this booting problem I had never heard the fan before. 

 

When not plugged in all lights remain dark and nothing happens. If you take the power out while it is 'on' everything stops. 

 

I have tried pressing the battery reset button but no change. I tried opening the case and taking the battery out, for about five minutes. No change.

 

I'm at a loss for what to try next. My IT guru father suspects a bad component somewhere but we have no way to identify it.

I have run through some more options I found online, like opening the case to physically remove the battery. No luck.
