Has anyone managed to upgrade a Switch 10 with 32gb storage (sw5 012) to win10 using the official microsoft windows upgrade procedure?

From the win10 upgrade icon in the taskbar I just get the message to wait and I'll be notified, but I wonder how will it ever be possibile for the upgrade to work when this notebook has less than 10gb free storage available after a factory restore, and much less after you install all windows updates (which are required to get the win10 upgrade).

Just put a micro SD card with at least 10GB free in the slot and tell the upgrade to use an external drive.

Did you do that or are you speculating? In fact my initial question is if anybody managed to upgrade in this way.

Even if the 10gb sd is enough to hold the installation files, Windows 10 won't upgrade unless it can keep both current win8.1 version and win10 installed side by side (in case you need to go back). And the 5gb free space I get from a clean system after all the windows 8.1 updates is so low I doubt it can hold both versions....

Unless the sd can be used also to hold the installed windows system but I don't think so (it would imply you could not remove the sd without first reverting to win8.1)

My Windows 10 registration status says "We’re working with our partners to make sure that Windows 10 is ready for your particular PC. When you get your notification, it means you can proceed with your update." Its been saying that since July 30th. Acer support says its a Microsoft problem, Microsoft (where I bought the tablet) says its an Acer problem. Is this what you have been seeing? I'm trying to figure out if I have a different reason than a shortage of storage because that status doesn't even hint at a storage issue. The Acer app says everything is up to date (but also shows no updates ever in the history). This is getting old. I've been trying to update since July 29th.

Yes I see the same and, googling around, I've not found any report of anyone successfully updating a system with wimboot or just 32gb storage (but, as you says, there might be also other blocking reasons).

Wimboot seems to have been an issue at least for win10 preview (see https://gigaom.com/2015/01/26/got-a-low-cost-laptop-windows-10-upgrade-may-take-some-effort/), free storage might be another and devices/drivers clearly another. Wiping the SSD and installing from usb doesn't seem to be an option if you want to upgrade your current windows license instead of buying a new one.

I have another system that cannot update, but it doesn't say "wait to be notified", it says "incompatible graphic adapter" which is much more clear!

I have both a 32gb W3 and W510 running windows 10 using the "apply every windows update, install a SD card, use the Windows tool to install" method. I also "keep all personal files and apps". Have done four installs this way now. My Switch 12 was the easiest but do not have a Switch 10 (all of my devices are personally purchased).

BTW I do not set up for dual boot. I do before starting the win 10 install create a recovery flash drive and pull a full system image (both built into Win 8-8.1). I used those to recover from the Win 10 preview on the W3 back to 8.1 and then install the real version. Only one operating system resident at a time & recovery files are all offline.

padgett, did your system have the same W10 upgrade status mine does (waiting for partner update)?

I have the impression people are seeing that when the real issue is the amount of storage.

    TIA

@padgett, do you remember how much free space you had before upgrading? Also what do you mean with "Windows tool to install"? Is that the "Get Windows 10" taskbar applet?

    a) Same message for W510, W3 just started upgrading

    b) The Windows 10 Migration Tool - select "Upgrade now"

    c) If it says it needs more space have an avalable 16gb or more SD card inserted, select "use external drive" and if the selection space is blank, click in it and the SD card should appear.
