hi all,

bought switch 12 about a month ago and encountered 2 annoying problems. i dont know if its mine or all switch 12 are the same. 1st, USB 3 not able to run external hdd, those which gets power from USB ports, and have no problems connecting to a USB 2 port. 2nd, the USB 2 port sometimes turn itself off.. connect something, use it for few moments.. and then the USB port turn itself off.. not getting power from it.. wait for sometime.. the usb port reconnects.. seriously? then just now i found out it might be something to do with the included keyboard. i un-attach it from the laptop (from the charging pins), the USB 2 port immediately turn itself on.. can someone verify this?

What are you connecting. I have run a HDD from the USB 3.0 to create a system image and a small hub on the 2.0 with a Webcam and small digital oscilloscope with no problem.

I wound if you have something that shuts down if not in use and that shuts the port down. Are you plugged into the wall when this happens ?

See? Its my laptops problem afterall... All I can connect are those which requires minimal power consumption.. Such as, mouse.. Flash drive and etc. But I cant run an external hdd, those plug and play ones.. Such as western digital passport .. Which runs with power from the usb port only..

As for the 2.0.. I have turned off all power saving feature for usb ports since it shuts itself off.. Still it turn itself off no matter what I plug into it. No matter if the unit is plugged or not to the wall. I suspect the provided keyboard, just yesterday.. I plug my wireless mouse receiver into the 2.0 and nope.. No power. But once I disconnect the keyboard from the laptop (from the charging pins), the port start powering and the mouse starts working. This is ***** me off.. Should I just take it to the service center?

That does not sound normal. Does the keyboard work ok ? If not maybe its battery is shorted and is dragging down everything else.

Mine is running Win 10 now but I have not seen anything like that. Just used to record some .mp4s and worked just fine.

Thanks for the help by the way, appreciate it. Yep, the keyboard works flawlessly. Just now when I turn the laptop on, the mouse seems ok for a moment(with the keyboard attached), then suddenly.. Boom, mouse getting no power from the laptop.. Ignored it, the mouse gets power from the port again after maybe 10 minutes. This problem persisted, from windows 8.1.. Now its windows 10.. Still the same..

That's got to be hardware. I can see not having enough for an external drive, which is likely to want to pull the full rated power, but a mouse is going to use almost nothing.

I just cant run external hdd and usb 2.0 will shuts off.. Will try ur method.. See if it at least solve my problem. 1 of my hdd died bcos of the usb 2.0 shuts down and another one seems to be dying
