E39/E700 seriously overheating when using GPS

I purchased this phone a few months ago and it is very nice. However, there is a serious design issue with it. When the phone is used for active GPS in a car, and connected to keep the battery full, the phone actually keeps on draining power, because the power supplied is not enough to replace the power being used with GPS functioning. The battery becomes very hot in this situation.

At maximum luminosity there is also an additional, very serious problem of the battery actually overheating. In fact this week the phone warned me that the battery was overheating and had to go to suspend mode when I was driving and needing GPS for my car journey.

What can I do now? Is this a batch or design issue? Anyone else experiencing this problem?

car charger must, at least have an output of 1000mAh - 5V to maintain battery charge.

GPS+CPU+Screen Brightness+AC Charge = high temperature

this is normal, had the same behaviour with Acer and other top android brands; i suggest you a phone holder that can be put on vents or you need to put it low on the windshield near vents.

The design of a phone with GPS should be able to deal with such use. For example, I have a 4 year old Nokia C7 running Symbian with Nokia/Here GPS that I used for long 1000+ km trips, and it never got warm with active GPS use in the car!

Put another way, you are supporting my unfortunate conclusion that I am better of reverting to 4-5 year old technology rather than employing the latest stuff which increasingly appears to be more about style rather than function! I'm trying to GET REAL WORK DONE with my devices, I have high standards, but not unreasonable ones! Smiley Surprised

So now the new E39 goes back to the shop for a refund because it is dangerously hot whilst my old C7 comes out of retirement to simply get the job done Smiley Sad

you can't compare a Nokia C7 to more modern phones and higher resolution screen.

not excuses but simply how new devices work, since you need faster CPU to handle goole navigator or new navigation software with higher resolution and fast route calculation.

look at computers and heatsinks increased size on during the last 10 days.

I'm sorry but you are missing the main point, but I do appreciate you trying to explain why this problem might be occuring.

With a correct design this issue would NOT be occuring. A device should not overheat and it is potentially very dangerous to get into that situation. Have you ever seen lithium fires, just go on Youtube?

If a phone offers the function for GPS to be used whilst driving, then the manufacturer must ensure that it is designed to withstand such use. If it can't withstand it, then they should not offer the functionality, especially if that can risk the life of the phone, even the life of the user. Period.

The Nokia C7 is hardly low-spec. Compared with current phones it had a screen of 210 ppi pixel density, not much different to the Acer, especially considering the 4 year gap. Moreover -

The C7 had already 4 years ago a camera resolution of 8mp, 3264 x 2448 pixels, dual LED flash versus today's E700 8mp, 3264 x 2448 pixels, single LED.

The C7 4 years ago even had Corning Gorilla glass versus today's E700 having no such thing and scratching easily.

The C7 camera 4 years ago even had face detection, unlike today's E700.

The C7 4 years ago even had NFC for payments, unlike today's E700.

...oh, the GPS worked properly and the phone did not overheat and go into nuclear meltdown mode like today's Acer E700. What did Acer learn in those 4 years? Nothing? Smiley Wink

...oh#2, I would still appreciate an official response from Acer on this hazardous issue.
