I am pretty sure its a 500+ PSU thats in there the needed PSU for a Geforce GTX 980 TI would be a 600+ or 650+ however after doing some reading,  statement was made where by this was said.....

 

so i went out and bought a 650 psu and the 980 Ti. turns out this Acer pc uses some stupid 12 pin connector that no other pc uses.

I would assume that connector is for the PSU as opposed to the GPU, either way do we have a PSU that will fit straight in so i could use a GTX 980 GPU ?

So the bottomline here comes down to this: Gateway(now owned by Acer) used proprietary 12v connectors for their motherboards. This connector is unique to their products and create a very difficult environment for those who choose to upgrade their PSUs. 

 

However, despite the difficulty of circumventing the proprietary wiring, there is a solution to this. It comes in the form of a DYI rewiring to attach an adaptor to make a 24-pin AT connector compatible with the 12v rail. You can follow the instructions here if you wish to explore this option.  

 

I personally would recommend getting a new motherboard to compliment your new GPU to ensure there are no compatibility issues -- though this may void your OEM Windows OS license. It's the easiest, albeit most expensive solution, but it also provides an additional layer ensuring that your system is prepared for future upgrades and enchancements that this proprietary mobo+PSU combo almost prohibits.
