Upgrading SW5-012-19RC to Windows 10 Insider Preview

Hoping someone can help me out on this.

 

I have the SW5-012-19RC 32GB model. I've tried installing from the ISO on usb key using a OTG adapter, USB in the keyboard slot as well as Windows Update to upgrade my tablet to Windows 10 IP. All failed for 1 reason or another. 

 

I read here to use RUFUS to create a bootable USB stick, setup with FAT32 and GPT. I can now use this to boot from. It gives me the option of using the USB stick or the Windows boot record when I boot up the tablet. USB stick is plugged in via USB OTG. 

 

However when I try to do an in place upgrade of Win8.1. It gives me an error that says I need to run the update from within Windows. 

 

If I choose the Advanced method it takes me to a list of all my partitions. So here are my questions on this before I potentially brick my tablet. This is a secondary machine so not too much of an issue just don't want to have to deal with having to put it all back together if I can.

 

1. Do I want to erase everything to create 1 large 32GB partitition and install Win10 to that?
2. If I do Option 1 will I get the full version of Win10 when it becomes available? This is Win8.1 with Bing so there is no Windows key. It's tied to the serial number on the mobo if I've read correctly on the intertubes. How does that work in this situation
3. If something gets borked and the install doesn't work or I need to go back to Win8.1 with Bing. How would I do that? Should I use the Acer Recovery Manager to create a backup first and that's all I need?

 I think that's all my questions.

I have been playing with these devices for a little while now we have 70. I am hoping i can help

 

From what i have learnt, Getting a copy of 8.1 with bing is hard work. i couldnt find away of getting it.

In the ended up buying 8.1 pro, as we are deploying the image using Microsoft deployment tool kit we needed that iso.

 

I can say that windows 10 technical preview works very well. i have installed it on a few devices and it works with all 8.1 drivers that i have tried so far.. 

 

Ive done some silly things on these tablets and bricking them doesnt seem to be an easy thing to achieve, ive had deployments and direct installs fail due to power or me being a biff and taking the usb dongle out.. all times i have managed to flaten the device and rebuild.. clearly though i have an iso with 8.1 pro and 10 insider preview so it is easy for me to rebuild

 

Deleting the partitions will delete the 8.1 with bing recovery.. don't do that unless you have an iso you can rebuild the device

 

Upgrading to windows 10 from the store/updates when its avalible will still keep the 8.1 with bing recovery partiton.

I would then suggest running another back up of windows10. maybe store on an external drive. just in case u need to recover windows 10... Should all fail you will have 8.1 with bing to roll back on then re upgrade.. however after the first year i dare say that this option will go..

 

I would export my data.. and restore your 8.1 with bing to factory settings.. then upgrade to 10... once upgraded create a new recovey to an external drive of the basic windows 10... should you need to revert back you know it is a pretty clean OS
