I am trying to find out the maximum supported RAM for my laptop. Since it is no longer supported by Acer I cannot find any details on their website and I have found 3 different answers between CNET, NewEgg and Crucial ranging anywhere from 8gb to 16gb to 32gb.

    Hi NormT1000,

I think it should support up to 16GB or 32GB but the reality is that will not more than likely because of the CPU. So i will say with 8GB RAM should do it.

    Here is more info: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27106/kw/v3-771g%20maximum%20memory#_ga=1.28530684.1111223599.1431959420

    1. The V3-771 only supports a maximum of 8Gb RAM if the processor is a dual core model.  If you have a dual core processor in your V3-771, installing additional RAM over and above 8Gb will either result in the notebook no longer booting, or the system booting with only 8Gb RAM available to the operating system.  Quad core V3-771 units can support more than 8Gb.

    2. If your system is running a 32bit version of Windows, no matter how much RAM is installed, 4Gb is the maximum amount which can be utilized.  Installing a 64bit version of Windows will overcome this limitation, but be aware that Windows 7 Home Basic 64bit supports a maximum of 8Gb of RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit a maximum of 16Gb.

    3. When installing additional RAM alongside the Acer-supplied RAM, use DDR3 PC1600 RAM to ensure that the newly installed RAM happily co-exists with the RAM you already have.  Installing PC1866 or PC2100 RAM alongside the existing RAM may result in your machine not booting, system instability or other undesirable behaviours.

    Hope it helps.

This is what Acer is quoting for the V3-371 and V3-371G with their RAM configuration(s):-

    Memory (1, 4, 5, 6)

Dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM support: Up to 4 GB of DDR3 system memory, upgradable to 16 GB using four soDIMM modules (5, 6)

    Models Characteristics and Conditions

#1. Specifications vary depending on model

#4. Shared system memory may be allocated to support graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors. Actual system memory available to the operating system will be reduced by any memory used by the graphics solution and resources required by the operating environment.

#5. Memory speed may vary, depending on the CPU, chipset or memory fitted.

#6. A 64-bit operating system is required to enjoy the ultimate performance of 4 GB or higher memory.

So, on an Acer Aspire V3-371or V3-571G (that has both Intel and NVIDIA graphics e.g. on mine I have the GeForce GT 640M) there are only "2 x soDIMM modules" on the back (once you open the back where the RAM, HDD and LAN modules are) hence and as Acer is quoting:-

"You can either put 1 X 1Gb or 4GB 204 pin in one soDIMM module or 2 x 1Gb or 4GB 204 pin inone soDIMM modules, this is of either "DDR3-1.50V (JEDEC compliant)" or "DDR3L 1.35V (JEDEC compliant)"

What I have installed and is working perfectly is: 2 X 4GB DDR3L 1.35V (JEDEC compliant) PC3L-14900-1866MHz and it works perfectly!!!

"YOU CANNOT PUT a kit of 16GB soDIMM modules on the V3-571G - example - 2 X 8GB or 1 X16GB, it does not work because the V3-371G only has 2 X soDIMM  modules for its RAM and to be able to install more than 8GB you need 4 X soDIMM modules for its RAM, as Acer specification states above.

The supported ram for the V3-771G is 16GB of DDR3 or DDR3L, have a look here, as the V3-771G has 4 soDIMM modules slots which can take a max each of 4GB-204 pin modules of DDR3 or DDR3L, see here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-V3-771G-Notebook.74597.0.html
