W510 screen shakes

The last couple of weeks, the screen of my W510 will start shaking. Other times a touch is clearly not hitting the right spot. I've updated/calibrated etc. I can get the screen to stop  shaking by pressing on the screen with two fingers. BTW, even when the screen is shaking some areas of screen may not be. Happens when docked to the keyboard too. I tried to restore to factory settings, but the contorl panel says I'm missing files. I'm at a loss.

    bgg,

There could be a few things that are causing this to happen, all are going to be hardware since you have restored to factory default settings using the media:

    Screen is going bad

    Cable came loose

    Motherboard going bad

You can check your BIOS to make sure you are using the most current version we have posted on our support site, version 2.00 dated 11/12/2013, to see if that resolves it.

    Thank you for your reply.

Please note: I was NOT able to restore to factory defaults. The error message is I am missing files. There was no other media when I purchased this tablet.

I tried to update the BIOS to 2.0, but not sure it worked since when I run the setup program it just installs drivers that were already installed. The_BIOS_ACER_2.00_A_A folder's contents are the same as the drivers folders.

Also - I don't think it is a hardware issue since the taskbar does NOT shake but the window above it does. If it was hardware - the whole screen should shake.

    Thanks

    bgg,

Here are a few suggestions to try:

    1. I presume you have installed all your Windows updates, if not please do so.
    2. Run a CHKDSK and see if that fixes the problem. You might have to Google how to do it in Windows 8.x, it's not the same as Windows 7 and earlier operating systems.
    3. What power option are you currently using?
    • Does this occur when changing to other power options, such as maximum battery life?
  • Does this only occur while using a browser?

All the updates have been installed. I was able to finally see the BIOS get updated. There was one failure:

    "Update touch key failed".

I've recorded screencasts to show the problem:

Notice parts of the screen shaking:

It does this docked or undocked, power cord inserted or not inserted.

That is really, really weird. Have you done virus scanning recently? I'm thinking you have some background software that mucking with the background image. Notice how it's only the background (or the live tile on the start screen) that's moving. Try also changing to a blank background to see if that helps while working on it.

I believe I now know the issue. The touchscreen is bad. There is a spot on the screen that is accepting false touches. Any part of the screen that can be dragged that lies underneath the false touch shakes that part, i.e. tile. So the false touch isn't press and release but more like touch and drag. I can actually but barely see a small transparent spot on the screen when it shakes. That explains why the screen will not accept a touch when it's shaking unless I press the screen with two fingers.

So as a touch device this unit is worthless to me, if I can figure out how to turn off the touch screen I could still use it when docked.

    bgg,

Could you please send me a PM with your serial number / SNID so I can research options for you?

    bgg,

It sounds to me like the mouse itself is being clicked somewhere on the screen. Does it have this problem when it is not docked?

    Justin,

Yes, docked or undocked... same problem.

    bgg,

Okay, thanks for clarifying. Did you get a chance to run the disc check to see if it could fix any problems? It sounds like a ghost touch issue, maybe we can get that fixed with the disc check.

If that fails the next step would be to restore the system to factory defaults. Since you stated that you don't have the recovery media created you can visit our Acer Store and purchase the recovery media.

I did run chkdsk with /f. It did not appear to fix any errors so I guess it found nothing.
