HDMI interrupts boot.

I'm connecting my Acer desktop (running Windows 8.1) to an older Olevia LCD TV/Monitor using an HDMI to DVI cable. When my computer powers on, it quickly stops its boot up process if the HDMI cable is plugged in, and I get "No Signal" and "Not compatible" flashing in the upper right hand corner of a blue video screen.

If I leave the HDMI unplugged when powering on, however, and then plug it in later in the boot up process, everything works fine.

If I power on the computer using "restart" the HDMI will again prevent the boot.

What can I do about this? I can't get to the BIOS at all using the monitor, but I could probably borrow a monitor that would let me use it. Is there something in the BIOS I can change that will delay the handshake with the monitor?

I don't think there is a setting in BIOS that would cause this. I think the problem may be related to the HDMI to DVI cable. Do you have another video source that you can connect to using HDMI only to see if it has the same problem?

Not sure what you mean. The TV is DVI only, so I can't connect to it from any source using HDMI only.

I was suggesting to connect it to another TV that does have HDMI, but that probably isn't necessary. When you convert the signal from HDMI to DVI, you loose the audio because DVI does not carry an audio signal. You would need to use a separate cable to carry the audio signal or use a display that has HDMI.

Well, sound is not the issue (I have separate speakers connected to the computer). As far as the video though, I don't believe it's the cable itself that is the problem because it does work, but only if I plug it in after the boot process has progressed about 30 seconds. But as I said, if it is plugged in at startup (regardless of whether the monitor is unplugged from the wall or powered on or off) it stops the boot and never sends any video signal. My hope was that I could delay whatever interrogation the computer is sending to the monitor untill the boot has progressed further.

One more clue: It WILL boot if I leave the HDMI end plugged into the computer, but unplug the DVI from the monitor.

Ok. Sorry. I had this thread mixed up with another one I was participating. I really think the problem has to be with the cable you are using. There isn't a setting I can think of that would cause it not to boot in that configuration, but work if it is plugged in afterwards. My suspicion is if you plug it in to an HDMI input device with a standard HDMI cable, it would boot with no issues. You could possibly try a different cable, but I can't guarantee that would work either. Maybe another community member has some other ideas.
