Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit

I would like to upgrade my Acer Aspire 4810 from Vista 32bit to Windows 7 64 bit.  My system is 64 bit compatible and there is plenty of memory.  It came with the Windows 7 upgrade s/w disk when purchased, I just never got around to it.  I have read that you cannot go directly from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64, you must go Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 OR Vista 64 to Windows 7 64.  I was hoping that I could reset my laptop to factory image (which I believe allowed me to select 32 or 64 bit Vista at that time), then upgrade to Windows 7 64 from there.  I know I will need to back up files, etc.    Will that work?

i'm not sure that the Acer recovery will allow to select 32 or 64bit version of Vista, maybe i'm wrong but i never read anything about that.

    I'm not an Acer employee.
