RAM Upgrade for Aspire 5738G

Hi. I bought an ASPIRE 5738G back in 2010 (full model number : AS5738G-664G32Mn). The notebook came standard with 4GB RAM (2 x 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM 667MHz CL5 modules).

I would now like to upgrade to 8GB RAM (by installing 2 x 4GB DDR2 RAM modules), but I find contradictory information online on whether this will actually work. The laptop is a 64-bit system and I have 64-bit Windows installed on it, so that part of the equation is OK. As far as I can tell there is no chipset limitation that would prohibit using 8GB RAM. What I do not know however, is whether the BIOS will support 8GB RAM.

I do not want to blow $100+ on old school DDR2 RAM if I'm not even sure that it is going to work in my notebook. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

    Hello Ockie

Thanks for the information. This is helpful. However I have one question. I have the same laptop (bought in June  2009) Acer Aspire 5738g (with 512MB NVIDIA Graphics card). The RAM I found on amazon is 8GB DDR3 RAM. Some more information given on the site:

    4GB 2Rx8 PC3 - 10600S - 9 - CHO - CH9
    4GB DDR3, 1333MHz, SO-DIMM

My question is, will this RAM be compatible with my laptop?

If you wish then you can see the product here

    Hi manishrana,

Could you give me the first ten characters of the motherboard serial number (S/N)? Only the first ten.

You'll find a white sticker near the memory slots. The string of characters located under the bar code is the S/N.

    Hi manishrana,

    Thanks for the pictures!Smiley Happy

The Intel PM45 chipset supports DDR3 at 800 or 1066MHz (according the P/N of your motherboard).

So I suggest you this memory module (100% compatible):

Thanks a ton Laurent. Two more doubts.

    1. The processor that was provided with this laptop is Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.0 GHz and it does not support Intel VT-X technology. Is it possible to upgrade it to T6670 or T6570 (these support Intel VT-X) since these are core 2 duo and of same T6000 series? Will the motherboard/chipset support it? If yes then do I need to update BIOS also?

    2. The WiFi card that was provided with this laptop is Intel wifi link 5100 AGN. I cannot find a driver for this on windows 10 platform. Can this be upgraded to any latest version?

About Intel Wifi link 5100 agn, read this Intel topic. It works fine with the MS driver.

    Hello laurent_14,

Can you please help me with the hard disk upgrade? The hard disk seems to have bad sectors now. System hangs and had to re-install windows couple of times. I want to replace and upgrade hard disk to 500 GB or 750 GB or 1 TB capacity (whichever is economic). First 10 digits from motherboard part number are MBP5601003 (from my previous thread).

I found some Hard Drives on amazon here. There are terms like WD5000LPVX, WD7500BPVX, WD5000BEVT which I guess are related to speed. Not able to decide which one will support my laptop. Attaching the screenshot of my current HDD (just in case required).

  • Hello,

WD5000BEVT (9.5mm): No problems. Same series as yours. 500Gb instead of 320Gb.

    WD7500BPVX (9.5mm): SATA 3 (6Gb/s) but backward compatible with SATA 2 (3Gb/s).

WD5000LPVX (7.0mm): SATA 3 (6Gb/s) but backward compatible with SATA 2 (3Gb/s) but no advantage.

FYI, the Aspire 5738G series was shipped with HDDs of 160, 250, 320, 500 or 640Gb.
