Hi i am new here my name is willyan. I have a question about booting from an usbstick

I have an acer aspire switch 10 and i have an usb stick with yumi on it. With all my computers it is working but not with my switch 10.

I tried several things in he boot menu, secure boot on and off and more. but my usb stick is not seen. My backup stick, witch i made with he acer recovery tool, i can see.

I suppose it has to do with the efi stuff.

Is there a way to boot from a home made stick with efi?

Or can i also boot with a non efi stick?

Also an external usb dvd drive is not seen in the boot sequence even with an windows 8 install disk in it.

I tried also with f12 key but i see onley he installed windows 8.1 (hd) boot.

I hope someone can tell me more about the boot stuff of this verry good tablet.

Hello Willyan. It's not easy to bypass the UEFI boot requirements. Typically someone might do that to use a different operating system, but the drivers required for the cooling systems on the new processors haven't been created for other OSes yet. You would find it a real problem if you got a different OS to run, only to burn up the computer because it couldn't cool! For now it's best to just stik with Windows. After the chipset has been out a while there will be ports of the drivers available for other OSes and then you can switch your Switch. Smiley Happy

The external DVD drive requires an external power source to work, the USB port doesn't provide sufficient power to run the motor.

Yes I read about the problems with other (not windows) systems.

It is on this moment not my intension, but I hope the linux communety find a solution I have to shame myself I can't.

But I have on the stick a mini windows xp. in whitch i can run a ghost program to back up a whole hd or a partition.(make an image)

I want to backup my switch 10 as it is, on this moment.

I don't know a imageing program whitch can do from a working system, making a backup of its own

And thats what I want now.

About the dvd player I used 2 usb ports 1 with the help of an otg cable. It is intent to work so, there are 2 usb cabels on it.

And it works also on the switch 10 I can read from it (burning not tried yet).

The problem is I can't see it in the boot menu after hitting f12 during the boot proces.

I see only 1 boot option and i want to see more, an dvd drive or an usb stick.

I can onley boot from its own hd, and that works.

My whole problem is, I can't see other bootable usb apparatus.

I tried every thing in he bios/ efi .

Please tell me me work around.

I am not familiair with efi, can anyone explane it to me please?

Just an other question, sorry for it, its is simple I recon, what is an kudo?? I think it is a Thing like a (like) i think.

You can try this page for info on creating a full system image within Windows, make sure you also create a recovery disk so you can restore the image. Since the recovery disk is UEFI it should be bootable for the restore. I'd backup to USB and create the recovery on another USB drive.

UEFI is basically a 'soft BIOS', where the BIOS loads from the disk and does a bunch of error checking to make sure nothing has been changed from the original. It's primary purpose is to keep you from getting infected with a rootkit virus. Since the rootkit wouldn't have the right signature, it will not load. There are other advantages to UEFI, including the ability to have things like diagnostics and remote access built in.

I believe you will have to plug the power USB cable into a USB charger instead of to the Switch 10. The DVD drive will not be functional without the extra power, though it will be recognised as a drive, it won't spin so data transfers will not work.

To boot from an external device, the device needs to be setup for UEFI boot, and it must have a signature recognizable to the hardware. Currently that means it needs to be signed by Acer or Microsoft.

As you suspected, a Kudo is similar to Like on other platforms. You give it to posts that are particularly helpful and having them raises your standing in the community. Similarly you choose 'Accept as Solution' when someone does a post that solves your problem or answers your original question. It make it easier for others with similar questions to find the answers.
