Hi there!; My PC is showing that S.M.A.R.T. "Hard disk failure in near future". I already did the backup to an external HD but I'm having problems, 1st. Trying to be sure it is not a false positive alert from the S.M.A.R.T. system and 2nd. Searching for a direct replacement HD because, even a supplier told that that HD is now discontinued. The HD is a Model HDT721010SLA360 (in the machine it has the id number; ST31000528AS) and I'm a bit scared to just thinking why is it so hard to find because, even thought the PC is out of warranty, the PC is not so old because I've been using it with care and on a good environment for just over 4 years. I've run Chckdsk-Fix, Standalone disk check software, revised drivers and everything turns out as being OK. Even, under properties/hardware, it shows as "device working properly". Is someone able to be of help? Thanks in advance.

The hard disks are subject to both electronic and mechanical stresses, which can each cause hard disk problems.

There are two main types of hard drive failure - physical and logical.

Physical failures are often due to a failure of the electric motor or the drive itself - the moving parts.

Logical failures come from corruption in the file system. If you've accidentally deleted an important registry entry or formatted the drive improperly, or if you have a nasty virus, hard drive problems will occur.

The best option is to restore your computer to factory settings so that you can identify whether it is  a Physical or Logical failures.  Please backup the data before proceeding wiht recovery.

If it a physical failures then you may need to replace the hard disk. This model supports Serial ATA hard disk up to 1 TB
