Acer Aspire V3-771G battery won't charge past 98%

I have an Acer Aspire V3-771G which I got in 2013. I've had no battery problems before. Earlier this month I noticed that the orange charging light remained on longer than usual. I turned my computer on and noticed that it said that the battery was 98% charged and charging.

I have not done the procedure of discharging and recharging the battery three times as mentioned in the manual. I have not removed the battery since I first installed it (it came with the computer). I don't normally use the laptop on battery power unless it happens to be on during a power outage.

I would like to know if I need a new battery or not, as I am concerned as to if the laptop will be continuously trying to fully charge the battery thus wearing it out prematurely.

The computer came with Windows 8. I have installed Windows 8.1. Please help.

Yes, leaving the battery in while plugged in will wear the battery down.After a year only charging to 98% is not abnormal.

If it is always at 98% and charges all the time will further wear it out. The heat from the laptop is also bad for the battery.

I have a Lenovo and you can set the charging to start and stop cargeing at whatever percentages you want. Acer doesn't include that option.

I keep my Acer battery in my drawer while plugged in. Every couple of months I take it out, plug it in and run it down,recharge it and take it out again. The only drawback is if you have an outage, you lose whatever you're working on.So far I haven't had that happen.

It seems to me like the issue has gone away. Here's what happened:

I locked the computer, went downstairs to eat dinner and came back upstairs. The computer had automatically went to sleep like it's supposed to. I woke it up, logged back in and checked the battery status. It reported Fully Charged (100%). I thought it was hilarious. It seems to me like all I needed to do was to use the battery until Windows let me know it was low on power, then charge it and then put the computer in a mode other than the normal one (just simply having it on).
