Aspire Switch 10 SW5-012 shuts down when charging

When I leave my SW5-012 tablet charging for a long time (couple of hours or overnight), I always find it turned off.

As a result I lose all open programs and documents.. And Chrome tells me that it was not shut down correctly.

There are no other problems with it - it turns back on fine and the battery shows full charge.

This problem doesn't happen if I leave the tablet overnight without connecting the charger, it just sleeps.

I can't catch the moment when it shuts down, as it only happens when I leave it charging unattended. I'm guessing it shuts down when the battery charges to 100%.

I checked all settings in the power plan, can't find anything that could cause this issue...

I think I found what was causing this problem. It was Acer Power Management application. When I close it in Task Manager (all processes starting with ePower*), the tablet does not shut down when charging.

Not sure what this software is for, the tablet seems to be working fine without it, so I'm going to simply uninstall it.

i have the same tablet and same issue.

Shutting down during a charge cycle.

Power settings say it should go to sleep not shut down.

Something is not right.

I actually tried to completely disable sleep in the power plan, and the tablet still shuts down when charging.

I am going to try a different power supply, will post the result here.

Yes. This is definitely an issue. I wonder if the unit is overheating and shutting down for that reason. I have not tested that theory though.

I will try it later. Does anyone know where the battery is on tablet? Is it near the motherboard and cpu??

I don't think it's overheating. It gets only a little bit warm when charging.

I tried 3 different 12V powers supplies - no luck.

I would try setting the power management when on AC to turn off the display but not to sleep, hibernate, or shut down.

Have seen machines get confused that way when doing something that takes a long time but there is no keyboard or touch screen input required.

Yes, I tried to completely disable sleep when tablet is plugged-in:

1. Put the computer to sleep (plugged in) = Never

2. Lid close action (plugged in) = Do nothing

This way when I connect the charger and close the lid, the tablet stays awake and does not shut down.

But this is a workaround, not a solution.

EDIT: In my previous comments I wrote that it still shuts down even when sleep is disabled. I am not sure if I selected the right power plan that time. Apparently, when the charger is connected, it automatically switches to "High performance" plan, which is hidden while the tablet is running on battery.

I get so tired of typing a long response only to get "Authentication Failed" on submit. I wonder why I bother.

Short form. Download BatteryInfoView. Set to logging on a short cycle. Charge. If it shuts shuts down look at the last entry to see if anything is different. Note the time.

Open Even Viewer and see if anything interesting happened then.

Don't have a Switch 10 so some guessing. Saving for a Switch 12.

Looks like this BatteryInfoView tool doesn't log events when the computer is in sleep mode. So it will not help in this case, I'm afraid.

No but it will tell you when it went into sleep mode and if anything odd was happening just before and use that time to see if anything happend then in Event Viewer. Or are you saying it goes into sleep mode and then some time later it shuts down ?

Correct, it goes to sleep when I plug in the charger and close the lid.

If I check it shortly after that (10-20 minutes later), it usually is OK - when I open the lid, it shows me lock screen.

But if I leave it charging for about an hour or longer, then it almost always shuts down.

I alos had problem of shutdown / reboot during sleep, so it also happed when I charged overnight. I did not uninstall ePower management but I have updated Realtek RTL8723BS SDIO Wireless driver and the problem is gone. Maybe ePower management somehow tries to change wireless power and driver fails so these two problems may be connected. For me, updating wifi driver fixed a bunch of problems - BSOD reboots / no wifi after sleep / shutdown during sleep.

mine has a broadcom wifi chip.

i did not yet uninstall the acer epower management app.

can anyone else confirm that aolution is the right one?

I'm pretty sure you can safely uninstall it.

If you are worried, try closing all ePower* processes in Task Manager and wait a couple of days, see if the tablet works fine without them.

Also possible that you have it set to automagically install updates. Some updates require a restart and if the update fails (will be in the event log) it may happen every time it checks.
