acer M3 581T: Help with restoring Windows 8

Hello!

I have an acer M3 581T which I bought about a year ago. Now, windows crashed and said there was a file missing. I am no longer able to boot up the system, I've tried the erecovery (alt f10) but it just proceeds and says it's not able to boot. I have no recovery cd/usb at hand. It is of my understanding that this ultrabook has two harddrives. One SSD on which the operating system is installed and one HDD with the other files on.

What do I do to make it work again? I do not care if all my files are lost.

Kindest regards.

Finally I got it to work, here is what I did for anyone who have the same problem.

First I downloaded a Windows 8.1 bootable disc from Microsoft's webpage, and put it on a USB

I was not able to run any repair or reset programs from there since the HDD was locked, but I could get into CMD, where I ran these commands:

    bootrec/fixMBR

    bootrec /fixBoot

    bootrec /rebuildBCD

I then restarted the computer and lastly went into bios (F2), and restored defaults.

After that Windows started to uppdate and started up correctly, none of my files were deleated in the process. Smiley Happy

The SSD is used as cache only, nothing installed.

the HDD has the OS and your data.

about acer erecovery, it starts and then gives you that error or it tries to start but give the error immediatly?

Ah okay, when I press alt+f10 it stays in the splash screen a few seconds and then it says "No bootable disc". So it tries to start i suppose.

If I just let it start it says:

PXE-E61: Media test faliure, check cable
    PXE-MOF: Exiting broadcom PXE ROM

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

When I go into bios it says HHD password: Frozen
The HDD appears when I check the boot page in bios.

oh...the famous HDD frozen password, you must clear that frozen password, then it will boot on recovery.

That did help clear the HDD password, however, when I proceed to press alt f10, it freezes again and I am back at square one.

it's sets HDD to frozen password everytime you start the recovery process?

i suggest you to create a bootable USB or CD media from Hiren's boot cd .iso
    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
unzip the zip file, burn the .iso file to CD or USB pen/external HDD

if you need to recover some personal data, after unlock the HDD password
then boot from the burned media and choose mini-xp from the options and browse on you HDD and save data to an USB device.

probably you have to disable secure boot on BIOS to be able to boot from this CD.

Downloading as we speak, my only question now is: Will my Windows product key recover? I do not have a key on paper since it's integrated in the computer somehow.

It's on BIOS, so don't worry.

Now the solution is near. Everything is working properly, but when I boot up mini Win XP, I come onto the desk, but I can't see anything but the background and the mouse pointer. I can't do anything from there.

try to boot with linux parted magic instead of mini xp, maybe some drivers of mini xp doesn't work on your system.

That did not work either, it just went black after a very long strain of errors. I don't like laptops... Smiley Tongue
    Nothing seem to boot correctly.

Thank you for your patience with me.

Same thing again, it just goes black pops the CD out and then reboots. Would it be an idea to nuke it (erase everything on the disc)?

    that's really strange.

i can agree about nuking the HDD but....how you would install windows again?

Yes, that would be an issue. This computer is driving me crazy. Cat Mad

At least we can list some facts here:

    - There is nothing wrong with the hardware, since it can find the HDD etc. I even opened it up and took it out.
    - Nothing on Hirens boot cd will work

    - Alt f10 will just freeze the HDD password and then reboot.

Are there any other software which could work on a bootable USB?

    Ubuntu live CD?

maybe has more drivers and will be able to work on your M3, download 32 bit version....i found it easier to boot.

    or...

if you have another PC, find a SATA TO USB adapter and connect it to your PC to backup data.
