I am brand new to this ACER laptop. It has a virus and I want to perform a factory reset.

Help!  I'm  sure I have a virus that won't let me do a full scan on Windows Defender (only quick).  It won't list ACER's eRecovery option.  How may I do a factory reset?  This is an ACER Aspire 5742-7653.

There are a number of things to try before a factory reset when you are infected. Have you tried Malwarebytes Anti-Malware yet? Have you booted into safe mode before trying the Defender scan? Since you are scanning with Defender instead of Security Essentials I assume you've upgraded the OS to Windows 8 or 8.1. If you do a factory restore you'll be back on Windows 7 and have to redo the upgrades.
